I was focusing on the laramie or laramie long horn 4x4 long bed. The ram web site indicates that the payload is just a little over 2000 lbs. I may consider a 3500 since there is not much of a price difference but a very significant difference in payload.
Laramie 2500 Crew Cab Long Bed 4z4 can be had with payload at 2,962. Just a quick piece of advice, check how much insurance would be for the 2500/250 versus 3500/350 and if your state has any licensing changes if you go above 10,000 GVWR.
Also another note, Ford is listing maximum capacities on their spreadsheet. Go to a dealer and open the door to look at the door plaque, you'll be amazed how far off the trucks can be payload wise once optioned up. I'm glad that RAM actually gives a guide that's specific to each model and trim level. I also fixed the link in my last post.
http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/towing_guide/tow_chart/Man, my reading comprehension must be off for the day. I just now noticed you were mentioning diesels. Well if Diesel, you will find that the Ford payload will nearly match the RAM payload. Again, the spreadsheet on Ford's website is taking the lightest weight equipped version of the vehicle and wheelbase and noting the maximum payload. When I looked at a Ford F-250, its payload was also around the low 2k range IIRC. While on the RAM website, it gives very specific ratings for each vehicle. I highly recommend you go 1-ton in this case if you need the payload.
