Dodge Ram payload vs Ford

I am contemplating the purchase of a new Truck and I have been comparing the Ram 2500 diesel to the Ford 250 diesel and it looks like the payload ratings are significantly different. The Ram payload is just a little over 2000 lbs while the ford is well over 3000 lbs. My preferance is the RAM which is what I drive now but the payload would be just about what I expect my pin weight to be on a new 5th wheel I am buying. Does anyone have any insight into why the payload ratings are so different between the ram and the ford.

  • If you look at the Ford 250/350 SRW you will see that Ford considers them the same truck and decreases some of the ratings of the slightly heaver 350.

RAM gives lower ratings to the 2500 and/or much higher ratings to the 3500.

Do not know why anyone buying new would buy a 2500 over a 3500, GM or RAM! Ford maybe because they seem to think they are pretty much the same truck, except for the rear axle spacer block!

The Ford has to have more payload so you can carry a spare diesel engine in the back

Does that spare engine come with a "do it yourself kit" fow when it gets to the campground... I will now exit and join you for a beer, sit back and watch the show...

  • The reason the rams is less is because the cummins diesel engine weighs so much more than either the ford or GM diesel engines and the gas motors weigh even less. The new 2500/3500 2013/14 ram trucks have a new frame suspension and axles with a greatly increased GVWR which in turn increased the payload of both the gas and diesel trucks.
  • Both Ford and GM 1500's gas and 2500's etc gas and diesel have always had much higher usable payload capacities. Read all the specs of each! It's been a subject of and on so many threads on this forum for many years now. Do your research and you'll find out why! If I were to post it, the Dodge/Ram cheerleaders and lovers would go berzerk as usual, so I won't.
  • what year trucks and are they long bed or short bed? Do they have regular cabs or crew cabs? 2WD or 4WD? A lot of variables.

  • Myriad of reasons. Have you looked at the 3500? Its not very much more, rides about the same empty and has a higher payload.
