Call me crazy but I kind of like the muted diesel clatter with my Cummins. This new Durmax sounds like a very impressive truck. I'm still not a fan of the DEF tank location or IFS, but the new injection pump may prove to be a great change by GM.
I understand the concern about the DEF tank but don't get the IFS thing. What is it about IFS that y'all don't like? They sure do ride and drive nice. I'm not trying to start a bashing thing just trying to educate myself. I worked for a lawn and landscape company for many years that had a fleet of trucks used for everything from hauling equipment trailers to snow plowing to just general landscaping use. We had all the brands of trucks, cant say I remember any of them being brought in for front driveline work. The owner liked to buy cheap worn out trucks and just keep them going. The only thing he would stay away from were the 6.0l Fords, he was burned to many times, lots of 7.3s running around there though.
I've been driving IFS trucks for the last 20 years and never had a problem granted mine have been half tons and the worst they have seen was some mild off roading.
Try towing a HEAVY 5er, from the people I have talked to the IFS will bounce up and down MUCH more than a straight axle.
I have to nominate this statement as the biggest load of BS award for 2017.- larry_barnhartExplorerto be fair and balanced as Bill says on tv many unhappy ram owners have had front end issues for years. chevman

Guess you did NOT read the article. They upgraded the torque converter. You can state the Allison is a MD trans if you are talking about the 3000. What application is the 1000 used in that is MD ? BESIDES something GM.
GM is loosing out on heavy hotshot haulers. I know not a lot but there is no doubt if GM could pass the SAE testing towing over 30K they sure would. So now the big 3 comparison will be dumbed down to 23K towing of a Gooseneck. - boshogExplorer

Sounds like a very nice truck. And I would venture to say that the vast majority of truck buyers don't care if it is rated to tow 23k or 30k.
Won't argue that but they need to beef up the payload in the SRW one ton pick-ups to compete with RAM and Ford. Current payload for the GM one tons eliminates it from carrying the weight of the fivers it is rated to tow. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

If RAM/CUMMINS/AISIN were not available the Denali would be in my shed. Pretty sad they can't tow more than 23K. Once they get the Allison beefed up they will get over 30K like the other two have done.
Ram mafia also attacks the Allison transmission too. :R
But if it was in his ram it would be the best medium duty transmission of all time. :S
Troy, you should be smart enough to know that the Allison 1000 is at it's limits and being a Ford guy that it does not compare to the Allison 3000 that Ford used with the Cummins in their MDTs.
Can you point me to a technical data sheet or some creditable source that supports your theory? From what I've read the only thing that changed in the medium duty Allison is the shift solenoids to back up the new L5P.GWolfe wrote:

Chevy really improved the IFS in 2011 I believe. It's a better overall riding suspension on and off road compared to the Solid Front Axle.- IdaDExplorer

My biggest thing is I prefer the way solid axles perform off-road. - Charlie_D_Explorer

What I said has NOTHING to do with performance 0-60 or climbing the mountain. When they have to be able to start out with over 30K in tow on a very steep grade several times in a row I am guessing they could not do it. The trans is the weak link in the SAE testing IMHO.
Why would they need to do that other than for bragging rights.
To quote Bionic Man:"Sounds like a very nice truck. And I would venture to say that the vast majority of truck buyers don't care if it is rated to tow 23k or 30k.
My question:"who among those on this forum tows 30K? - Michelle_SExplorer IIIIf you really look at those 30K plus towing numbers and do the math, you'll see they will more than likely run out of load capacity long before they reach those magic 30K plus towing numbers. Most of the new breed trucks will still reach or exceed GVWR in the 20K to 22K of 5er, as the trucks run approx 9K in towing trim, add 4K to 5K pin weight and you at or over GVWR.
