Electric Drum vs Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Disc brakes are far superior, and I wish more trailer makers offered them. Big difference in braking power at highway speeds.

My trailer did not come with them, but I plan on upgrading them this summer. The only cons of disc brakes is the initial cost, and the requirement for a compatible brake controller.

No experience with trailer disc brakes. Logic would indicate they are better than drum brakes. However, I have drum brakes and have no complaints and have had no problems. I imagine there are many on here with drums and no complaints.

I will say that my current Highland Ridge 216 is the best quality RV I've ever owned and I've had more than 10 RVs including a high end Monaco DP motorhome.

My open range 310bhs has electric drum brakes on both axles and it will shut it down in a hurry. I have no doubt disc brakes are better, but between my F250 and dual axle brakes I don't have an issue.

Disc brakes are better for several reasons. If setup properly with a good controller electric drum brakes are more than sufficient.

the biggest thing about disc brakes. are COOLING... they can take and dissipate heat much faster...

great for going down LONG hills... and quick stops at freeways speeds. or a lot of stop and go traffic on freeway traffic jams.

same with cars and trucks... when was the last time you seen Drum Front brakes on New cars/trucks... like 1970's.

BUT, do not use this one item be the biggest issue to get this trailer...

many have travels lots and lots of miles and never needed disc brakes... the reason the factories are being so SLOW at upgrading.
my opinion.

KZ uses Dexter self adjusting electric drum brakes........disc brakes must be OPTIONAL (didn't know they had them on that light of trailer)

But IF they really are 'disc brakes' then that is a big 'upgrade' over electric drum brakes.....even self adjusting ones.

YES electric drum brakes work......disc brakes just work much better

I thought I knew almost everything about KZ...
I had NO IDEA they would put hyd/Disc on a Spree... and a 25' at that ???? There has to be something that is missing somewhere ?????????????

last year their top of the line was the Stoneridge or Durango Gold.. that was a option.. not standard...

Could be a used trailer that somebody has upgraded to disc brakes.

I see nothing about disk brakes on KZ's website. I did see one 2016 Connect advertised to have disk brakes, don't know if that is a typo or not. I would much prefer the disks over drums, but it will be a long time before I would consider another KZ.

I had a K-Z and it is a good unit for the money. We traded it in when we went full timing. I have always had the drum breaks. Here is why.
1. Some of the disk break systems will not work on factory installed breaking systems in a pick up.
2.When I purchased my Carriage, I called the company, (they were still in business) and was told that the disk are not necessary.

Now, what I would check no mater what system you do get, is the wiring 1X per year and be sure you check lights,breaks before you use the trailer each time.
