Eternabond lifting rubber roof

Last year I applied Eternabond over all the factory applied lap sealant on my roof. I cleaned the surface using a 50/50 mixture of water and LA's Awesome cleaner.

The Eternabond is holding well however I've noticed in a few (small) spots the rubber roof has lost its bond with the decking directly under where the Eternabond tape is. The tape itself is still stuck to the membrane, the membrane is lifting off of the decking.

These are small 1" - 2" areas in probably no more than 5 random spots.

No where else is this happening.

Could the adhesive in the Eternabond be causing this to happen?

Doubt the Awesome would cause lifting. Has nothing in it that would. I'm thinking the same as 93Cobra that the membrane didn't bond well with the deck and the tape is just exaggerating it.
It is probably not "lifting" but has lost the glue bond between membrane and sheathing. What is unknown is the type of adhesive used, an organic adhesive will loosen with just water introduced. Add in a strong butyl based surfactant and you have the formula for common glue removers.

First time I've heard the word "butyl" and "surfactant" used on a forum in a long time. And a I used them the last time I saw them.

You, sir, have been in the cleaning chemical business at one time or another (I'm guessing). :-)

  • I wonder too if it's just a poor bonding. On my roof I notice that over the years the membrane has cone un-bonded along the top edges. I know it's not a leak because I had to slice into some of the sections and the roof is dry underneath

  • Is it possible that your cleaning solution got under the membrane? Eternabond has an encapsulated adhesive that is mixed into the matrix when pressure is applied. It wouldn't be the cause of the roofing membrane moving because it doesn't enter the space between membrane and roof sheathing.
  • Wonder then if the Eternabond is just showing the areas that didn't originally adhere.

I've never heard of anything like that. The adhesive in eternabond isn't solvent based, so my guess is that the rubber never adhered properly in the first place.
