No spin here. I will say the same thing about the Ford 3.0L that is say about the Ecodiesel. Although it is great for fuel mileage, I think it is too small for a half ton andtowing engine like the Ecoboost 3.5L will blow it's doors of towing. It is what it is which is for fuel mileage and it ain't what it ain't which is a towing power house like the big boy diesels in the HD trucks.
IMO the EcoDiesel is more of a competitor to the 2.7 Ecoboost.
The reality is most half ton buyers tow nothing, and don't haul more than a little stuff from Lowes back to the house. The EcoDiesel and this new Ford diesel will probably work really well in that role.
If you're towing much over 7-8k lbs regularly I wouldn't buy any half ton. Just my opinion.
Yeah, but even though most don't tow, they want their performance. This is why the Hemi outsells the Ecodiesel and Pentastar, and why the Ecoboost outsells the base 3.5L. For those that don't mind sacrificing power and performance for fuel mileage then then these little diesels are great. Then again, if you don't tow then why not get a midsize Colorado diesel if fuel economy is more important. If you want more performance then these little diesels will leave you wanting.
I towed 9,500 lbs with my HD F150 3.5L Ecoboost and did it quite regularly. Does it handle the load like a 3/4 ton? No, but handled it like a champ for four years and I would not hesitate to do it again if I still had that truck. Then again, i am not a "you need a 3/4 ton to pull a utility trailer" snob. Hell even if I didn't tow, I would still choose power over economy if the truck gets at least 16 mpg combined.
