I don't know why you or anyone else thinks spilling any amount of fuel on the ground is a good idea and if the EPA catches wind of this I bet we will be seeing a recall on this system. If in fact they do let fuel spill on the ground. Even if it was caused be operator error or not.
You could accidentally spill fuel on the ground by grabbing the handle before it's in the fuel neck, but the EPA isn't cracking down.
The system will not spill fuel unless there is operator error. - Me_AgainExplorer IIII put this cap on my 2015 a year ago. Chris

I was searching for other info regarding capless systems on Ram, and came across the post. Cruising through it, I saw the discussion on page 8 or so, talking about the same question.. does the liquid leak out or not.
Elsewhere on the inter-web, there's alot of information that seems to support the idea that liquid/fuel should NOT escape between the two flappers and leak to the ground. There's folks who have posted pictures of diesel fuel sitting in the area between.. just sitting there, not escaping. I know what happened when I tested. Could there be a difference in design between the 1500 and 2500/3500?
I do have the green 'shipping' plug and I'll keep using it. Of note, I looked again, and there is some black 'crud' in the cavity of the green plug. Not a lot, but there is some.
Also, my gas door has a gasket around it, so I assume that keeps SOME **** from coming in. Next time I run through a carwash, I will check to see how much water comes in the door.
Mike - ShinerBockExplorerSorry, I read the post I quoted wrong.
- blofgrenExplorerThank you very much for the info, Don. That would explain why my truck didn't come with the plug.
I think I will still put the vented Mopar cap on just for a bit of extra protection. - Perrysburg_DodgExplorerTo keep this in context here is what I posted on the thread I started.
Use of fuel cap on capless Rams!
"So I asked my dealer to call his district Rep and ask if there would be any issue using the green aluminum cap. I reason I asked was I was worried that using the cap may interfere with the venting of the tank. Just like a capped system will throw a code and issue a warning "Tighten or Replace Gas Cap", what if any issues would we have if we add a cap to the system?
Well I got my answer Saturday after dropping off the daughters 2014 Dart. Jon told me that it is Ram's position that NO CAP BE USED! I will see if I can get an Engineer from my plant to contact someone in the fuel systems department to see why and what effect adding a cap to the system would cause.
The trucks are shipped from the fuel tank supplier to the Assembly Plant with a green plastic cap installed. The factory removes this cap to add fuel and then reinstalls it. The dealers are instructed to remove and dispose (recycle) the caps.
I wonder if some of the codes people are seeing could be traced back to adding this cap. I would not have an issue with the capless system if the fuel door was latched close ."
It should be noted that the Mopar cap is vented unlike the green aluminum caps that have an o-ring.
Don - WalabyExplorer IIHere's a link to another forum where there's a thread on ram1500diesel.com on the same topic. Granted it started in 2014. Perrysburg Dodgeboy.. I think you started this discussion back then
Ram 1500 ecodiesel discussion
In this thread, starting on page 8, is the discussion about the vent and liquid being trapped between the flappers and does it dump outside or not. Here too, some folks say fuel dumps out, others say on theirs it does not.
Sure would be nice to hear definitively. Just weird that for some folks (like me) it leaks to the ground and others (like Don, and others on the forum in the link above) it does not.
Mike - WalabyExplorer IIPlease update us with their response. Maybe all of ours that do let it leak out are defective, and not yours.
Mike - ramgunnerExplorerFuel will drain out of ours as well if the second door isn't open. Had it happen once when I fueled up at a place with a VERY stiff hose.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerOK the dealer is calling Ram because he does not think any fuel trapped in between the first and second flap should leak to the ground. He feels my truck is operating correctly in not allowing fuel to leak out (or anything for that matter). When he hears back and then notifies me I'll let you all know.
Also why do diesels need the capless system? The EPA only requires them on gas vehicles not diesel right? Think EVAC code and fuel cap here.
