For those who have owned a 1999-2003 Ford 7.3L diesel and gone to the Ford 6.2L gas engine, have you noticed a difference towing your travel trailer? Have the higher RPMs been problematic to you/or spouse over a long eight hour trip towing? How about towing mileage differences?I know the Ford F-250 & F-350 are wonderfully nice trucks with great creature comforts, but if you had it do to over, would you do it again? Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.Coming from a 7.3, a 6.2 revving at any RPM would still be quieter than the 7.3. We had a 3V V10 before this. A higher torque engine but with a 5 speed tranny. I find the 6.2 with the 6 speed tows just as good as the v10. You will find the same coming from the 4 speed 4R100.Not sure the weight you are going to pull but I'm just over 10,000lbs and love the way it pulls/rides.S

My '04 has a V10 and it makes far less noise then any Power-smoke we had at work. Our TT is only about 8500 lb but when X is loaded they hit the scales at between 16000 and 17000. At almost 75 MPH the rpm's are only 2000. If I take it out of overdrive the rpm's are still only 3000. I don't like to drive in 2nd to much at highway speeds but at 65 it still less then 4000 rpm's. That's the only time I think it makes a noise but for 10 or 15 min at a time it doesn't bother me.

My 6.2 pulls my 10k t.t.very well,I am happy with it.It is surprisingly quite in the cab at 4500 rpm,yes you can hear it but you can easily carry on a conversation.mileage when towing is 9-10 mpg

If that rattle did not bother you, you'll love the 6.2 sound.The 6.2 is a smooth, easy revving engine, with good power. The 6-speed transmission makes this a super puller.I tow at 60-62 mph, and will average 9 mpg, which I think is good. I have to say, that the non towing mileage is not the best, 13-14 as I recall. I don't use mine as a daily driver.I don't remember hearing any problems with the 6.2, since they started using them in the Super Duty. Mine is a 13, and am very satisfied with it.Jerry

Never have owned a diesel, but I can tell you that Ford did an excellent job with this engine, and with insulating the cab/engine compartment. Very smooth and quiet. Yes, it's going to rev and get louder on the hills, but not bad and I actually like to hear it work at those times. Mine has 3:73 gears as I found a great deal on dealer stock, but I'm only towing a out 7500 lbs. To get the 4:30's you will have to order your truck. If it isn't going to be a daily driver I would get the 4:30 gears no matter how much you tow as that is my only regret. Mileage claims have to be taken with a grain of salt. Needless to say it won't be great, but compared to the $8K additional sticker on the diesel, and the lower cost of gas, I still think I came out ahead. Awesome truck, I love it.

Same here,I am happy with how my truck pulls my 10k trailer,but if I was going bigger I would go with the 4.30

I ran a 99 psd for 13 years. From that you can see that I do not get in a hurry if the wheels are turning. I was looking for change did some research and ordered a 2 WD F250 with the 6.2. It tows a 11.5K fifth wheel.

I will always remember the first trip we took off on and the wife remarked, "wow we can even listen to the radio in this truck."

I am happier than a pig in you know what with the 2012. It will definitely out yank the 99 diesel but that is apples and oranges.

I normally get 8.7 towing at 65 mph. We just got back from SC to IL dead heading since we left the fifth wheel in SC for later on this winter. I ran it on at least 75 all the time and it knocked out 14.6 mpg.

Sometimes i think i would be better accepted in the community if I re badged it as a gasser in diesel clothing. :B

I'm running a 6.2 with 4.30 gears pulling a trailer rated at 15600, that's also what the truck is rated to pull. I have no problems towing it and it never has to run at red line unless I want it to. Most interstate or flat two lanes it just runs along just under or at 2K rpm with the cruise set. Remember one thing lower gears does more than raise the rpm it changes the torque multiplication so matter what gear you are in you will have more HP and torque at the point were the rubber meets the road. You can have a 1000 HP but if the final gearing is wrong you have defeated all the power the motor can generate, the new 6 speed with 2 OD gears makes up for the lower gears when at hwy speeds.

The 6.2 sounds great when reving high. Not loud or annoying. Matched with the 6sp tranny it pulls fine until it gets to the hills...big hills drop the tranny down to 2nd and it seems to stay there @ redline regardless of speed or grade. (Search 2nd gear runout). Using manual mode helps this but that is not for me as I want less to concentrate on when driving not more. I never had a single issue with my 6.2 and reported issues on the various Ford sites are few and far between. I switched because I do mostly mountain towing in western Canada and wanted more power (insert manly grunt) and I'm happy I did.
