Ended up with 2001 F250 5.4 V8. Its far cry than my old 2004 F250 with V10, but I am very happy with the truck. It pulls up to 7,400 pounds which is plenty for me.

Congrats on the truck. It'll be interesting to here fuel economy and performance reports from you comparing the two trucks.

I traded my 05 6.0 after 7 years ~170k hard miles. Oil leak, EGR valve was the only repairs I had to do during the 7 years.

My BIL owned a 04 6.0 and I recall he replaced a EGR valve and a FICM during ~5 years of ownership and I know he ran the snot out of that truck. He traded that truck on a 09 RAM 6.7 cummins and had constant issues with CEL's, soot clogging EGR, turbo, soot clogged DPF and unloaded it after 9 months thinking he was getting a better truck.

Both of us considered those trucks overall reliability and durability to be outstanding.

Costs associated with a recall aren't simply the amount spent on repairs. They had to diagnose the problem and engineer a solution. They had to have legal involved. They had a public service campaign that involved contacting owners, contacting dealers, ads on radio and tv. They likely had to send representatives out to events to do damage control. I'm sure there are a litany of other "overhead" issues involved in the warranty work outside of straight labor hours. How much of that cost was labor and parts? How much was "overhead"?

You are guessing, just like I am. I came right out and stated that my number was a guess though. I have no hard and fast numbers. I don't know why you are taking exception to my comments.

I've met plenty of people over the years in campgrounds that have either the 6.0 or the 6.4. The older folks tend not to spend an hour a day in forums discussing how horrible the trucks are. Those that didn't know about the issue loved their trucks.

My buddy that had a 6.0 had no idea about the problems with the engine until he had to rebuild the top end at around 175K miles.

The whole moral of my story was that there are likely a lot of 6.0 owners that haven't experienced a single problem and enjoyed the heck outta their trucks. I, personally, wouldn't take the risk based upon what I know.

Ford, in court said this engine cost them over a Billion dollars back in the day in warrantee work. (Years later it's well over that cost now.)(Many were over warrantee period when they blew up so Ford never fixed those on their dime or the customer took them to private mechanics to save some $$$ so the figures are much higher.)

Simple math tells us that every single 6.0 built needed $1,000 in repair...........or 1 out of 10 cost $10,000 to repair...........or every other 6.0 built cost 5 grand to fix.

Since a headgasket job back in the day cost around 4 grand at the dealership it's highly unlikely that 1 out of 10 trucks were fixed for 10 grand.
It's also highly unlikely that every single 6.0 made needed $1,000 in warrantee repair.

Logically, the truth is going to be somewhere around the middle. If so, that means every other 6.0 engine made needed $5,000 dollars in warrantee repair work; or a half a million 6.0 engines needed repair work done to them. :E This is a far cry from the "90%+ had no major problems" that you state.

Even if we use your figures of only 1 out of 10 trucks needed repaired that 1 truck needed $10,000 in repair work in it's warrantee lifetime. :E Like I said, that means one could do 2 headgasket jobs and $2,000 dollars of other repair work on this one truck. :E

Jeremiah- Ford and all OEM's pass the warranty costs on to the supplier responsible ,the reason or one of the reasons Ford and international parted ways was Ford was very quik to replace engines and whole trucks (I have a friend who had 2 F250 replaced)after all its on cornbinder right.
They got sued for replacing engines , not fixing like the engine supplier wanted.
A whole host of other issues among Fords mods and up rates to the power as well ,i am sure the court documents run into the tens of thousands of pages.
As far as billions ? I doubt Ford or international are going to discuss it.

The 6.0 PSD is inferior to the V10 and almost every other HD motor ever made when you look at warrenty cost Ford paid on this motor. That's simple a fact, Ford paid over a BILLION dollars in warrenty repairs on the 6.0 PSD. That is a fact that many do not see. They are good trucks when the issues are addressed and hundreds of thousands are still on the road...I see them out there every day... But the facts are simply to hard to ignore... Stock for stock nearly every other HD motor produced....ever...was more reliable...with very few exceptions.

Now that said the 6.0 does have a lot going for it.

* The transmission is FANTASTIC
* The bottom end of the motor is very strong and reliable...rarely is there an issue with the lower end
* We are no longer dealing with trucks under warrenty and the issues with the 6.0 are well known and fixes exist

Many run the 6.0 with little to no problems... They maintain them and and keep an eye on temps. For some it's worth the risk to get a very nice truck 5-10k cheaper than a Duramax or a Cummins... For others, they will not approach a 6.0 with a 10 ft pole...

You just have to decide which side of the fence you are on.
