Because I had a car one time that had a timing belt. It broke, dropped a valve and destroyed an engine. Have never suffered that kind of problem with a chain in over 700K+ miles and 36 years of drivng.
Very true, in many engines the belt is a maintenance item that needs to be replaced every 60-100K or so. Although I think this interval has been increasing as belt technology has improved.
How catastrophic a broken belt would be would depend on wether the new power stroke was an interference engine or not.
Chains rarely break, although they do stretch and throw the timing off. Very occasionally they may jump a tooth. - patperry2766Explorer II

The upgrade price is $3000/$4000 depending on the trim level of the truck. It's not the upgrade price that will kill sales, it will be the fact that the engine has a TIMING BELT, not a timing chain. Personally, that's a deal killer for me.

This makes me wonder why Harley Davidson switched from chains to belts and claimed that it was a huge improvement. I have seen timing belts in CNC machine tools last 20 years of three shift operations.
HA! My dad use to give Harley guys a hard time and say they only needed a belt because they didn't make enough power to stretch one. Obviously just some good natured brand rivalry.
Modern belts can be pretty good. If you are going to call it a deal killer, why not just say if it doesn't have timing GEARS then I don't want it? Chains can stretch too...unreliable modern junk. :)

Why do people post BS like 23 mpg from an HD truck? Why? It contributes nothing and proves nothing, and smacks of a person who's words and opinions can't be trusted.......
Oh chit! Now you done did it! The geezernet.com mileage police will be on you like flys on turds!!! Better duck!
I read the original post and it never said how fast he was going or what the winds were doing as he crossed the plains from Denver to Chicago. Those factors could make a huge difference. I had a truck that I consistently got 10mpg out of and let my 16 year old son take it on a trip with a fixed tight budget and he got over 12mpg but he drove at night at 52mph.
I do remember reading a review on a Dodge with a Cummins in a major magazine in 1991 that gave 27mpg in a documented test. But, they were probably driving slower and only had about 150hp too. - Grit_dogNavigator

Yep. Sure doesn't make sense to me. Just like someone who claims to have towed a 7000 pound trailer at the speed limit over I70 in Colorado with a NA V6 Ford. Hard to take anything seriously from them after those types of claims.
