As for the Ford not being able to pass at highway speeds. I just picked up the boat Sunday. It is a 24' Larson that weighs in at 6800# boat, trailer and full of fuel (55 gal.). I tried to do a video towing it but could not figure out how to live stream it. Bottom line the Ram is running a 8 speed trans and the Ford has a 10 speed. With all of those gears these little diesels do not have any problems passing. At 65 mph I put the go peddle to the floor and before I was half way around a big truck I was at 82 mph. This is with a 8 speed the 10 speed will or should do as good.
Gears only multiply torque, not horsepower which is what dictates how fast you can go passing. The difference between a 6 speed and 8 speed attached the the same engine in regards to passing power would be almost identical or very minimal. What an 8 speed will gain you is the ability to stay within your engine's peak power range better than a 6 speed especially when towing.
There can be a big difference depending on where the two extra gears are added. In big trucks the difference between a 13 and an 18 is on the bottom end. After you,re on the high side there's no difference but you take a 10 and a 13 and then you have the passing gears with the 13. 13 on the high side will walk off and leave a 10 on the high side. - ShinerBockExplorer

Now thats funny................. - Perrysburg_DodgExplorerWell I was told mid summer MY 2019, that would be this summer and the Jeep Wangler is getting the Ecodiesel for Wangler MY 2018 again this summer. I think maybe what is confusing is the Ram is now being sold as a 2019 MY not a 2018. Never understood manufactures doing this. If you are going to launch a new platform mid year call it a 2018-1/2 not a 2019. Well if the Ecodiesel is not coming out until mid summer of 2019 we will find out soon.

Lets talk about the 10 speed now. FCA is running a 9speed in our cars. The number one complaint with them (and all others running a 9 speed) is they will not hold the top two gears. Customers complain that the transmission keeps "hunting for the right gear". To maintain the top gear you have to be running over 70 mph. The highest "normal" speed limit on a Federal highway is 70 mph. So if you do get the car to shift into the top gear any slight incline will have the trans dropping two of three gears to maintain speed. I can't help but wounder how Ford and GM have worked around this! ZF and FCA have been building the 9 speed for sometime now but it took a bit to workout the shifting patterns to keep the customer happy. With a 10 speed this is going to be even harder. I bet that is the main reason ZF is refusing to go above 9 speeds. The little fuel mileage bump is not worth the headache in keeping the customer happy.

That's with 250 HP, imagine a Chevy Colorado with only 181 HP. - goducks10ExplorerFrom the PickupTrucks.com article.
How It Tows
Where the 3.0-liter Power Stroke engine works less well is — surprisingly — towing. I sampled two different setups: An F-150 with a 3.31:1 axle gears (which is what you get when you specify the FX4 Off-Road Package) that towed a 6,240-pound box trailer and a second half ton with an optional 3.55:1 axle ratio hauling a 5,500-pound horse trailer. Off the line, the new Power Stroke exhibits excellent initial low-end grunt and has absolutely no problem moving these loads up hills at speeds below 40 mph. But once the speed and rpm begin to climb, the transmission starts to behave in a way that keeps this engine from shining like it should.
Towing up a hill with a 3 to 4 percent grade at 55-60 mph, I routinely slowly lost speed despite having my foot to the floor. Even with Tow/Haul mode selected, the transmission refused to kick down from 6th gear, despite having another 1,000 rpm before redlining. The struggle was most noticeable in the 3.31-equipped truck, with the 3.55-equipped truck only slightly less out of breath, but until I slipped the transmission selector into manual and dropped a gear myself, no more oomph was to be found. Once I took over shifting duties, performance felt a little better. - wompsExplorerDon, everything I have read says the Ecodeisel won’t be available until the 2019 calendar year. I checked with our local Ram dealer and he said he has no information on when he can order one. Did not drive a new Ram but looked at and sat in one. Nice truck. The price is a heart stopper though. I’m from Canada and the Laramie I looked at stickers for over $80,000. Huge discounts on past years models of up to $25,000 so very few 2019 Rams being sold yet.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerWell with a 10 speed transmission and towing gear that F-150 towing a 6000# boat will not have a problem passing. I tow a 6800# boat and can pass anytime I want. She can run down the road at any posted speed and does fine towing the boat in the mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky at highway speed. We get it you not only have total disdain for anything FCA but also anything diesel.
Your posts only show how little you know and how much of a troll you truly are. Go back under your bridge were you feel safe.
Womps, the 2019 1500 Ecodiesel will be on dealer lots this summer, sounds like late June or July. The 2019 Ram 1500 gas trucks are already on the lots.

No what it shows is you have never driven anything that can make that fuel mileage. My 2004 Ram Cummings made 27 mpg at 65 all day (not towing) and my 2015 Ecodiesel 4X4 CC makes 30 mpg @ 60 mph before the tune and 32 with the GDE tune. The 2019 Ecodiesel due out in mid summer will be rated two mpg higher then Fords 3.0 diesel. Maybe you should buy something with more then 6 gears if you want to get good fuel mileage.
This is a new age and some people will never understand that.
Don
What heavy duty truck has more than 6 gears? And the Ecodiesel hitting the market by mid summer, maybe next summer, maybe.
FYI - I daily drive a Transit PSD in a 6 speed van mostly highway with the tallest gears available.....I know what mileage what some vehicles get, diesels are no miracle. It's a business vehicle, and there is no economic debate as to whether it makes sense. It is owned btw.
Back on topic, anyone read the terrible F150 PSD review, the one where it has no reserve power for passing with a 6500lb boat? Ya.
