My situation-my truck is my daily driver and overall family vehicle, so I put on easily 40k miles a year. I've had my truck coming up on a year now and for the first 7 months, diesel was CHEAPER than gas here in Iowa (it isn't currently-20 cents more). So my numbers will be from this last year and give the gas trucks the benefit and say they were the same price all year. With your numbers, 16 mpg for the Ecoboost and 22 mpg for the Ecodiesel, and the average price of gasdiesel over the past year, I save $1,880 a year. 4 oil changes at $137=548 vs my buddy pays $51=204 for his EB. So oil changes cost me $344 more a year. So add DEF in there and I'm saving about $1,500 a year or $125month.
And that is fine and dandy, but I am speaking in terms of normal everyday half ton owners that (as has been stated before) do not tow that often. Most are comfortable with the fuel mileage that trucks like the Ecoboost, 5.0L, 5.3L or 5.7L get. If they weren't then the base model engine that gets the best fuel economy would be the most purchased engine in every make especially since most don't tow. However, this is not the case and the higher power engines outsell the lower powered more fuel efficient ones by a HUGE margin.
Just as it is not about being the fastest to you, it is not all about saving the most money in fuel to most others. It is all about what price people are willing to pay for their trucks performance. As long as fuel remains cheap and the higher powered engines get reasonable fuel economy then they will continue to outsell engines like this 3.0 and Ecodiesel. I can guarantee you that if you that if you switched every 3.5L Ecoboost owner in one of these lower powered diesels and the savings were less than $50 per month, most would decline the offer. Why, because $50 is not enough savings to sacrifice that much
Although, there is something off on your numbers. Per Gasbuddy.com using the lowest prices on each since you did not post fuel prices, gas averages at about $2.19 and diesel is $2.65 in Iowa. If you drove 40k a year, that would only be a savings of $656 using the fuelly mpg. I am not sure where you are getting this $1,880. If you post your fuel costs then I can check your math. So after you calculate your oil changes(fuel filter?) then you are left with an anual savings of only $312 or $26 a month.
