Thanks for all the comments though none give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. The dealer quoted $6900 which I thought was high but I can see the even higher figure now. It seems like all have similar problems. I'm trying to get the BBB to arbitrate. Is there any articles out there that defines the problem that I can use in my defense? My dealer in Hutchinson Ks dumped me; I'm on my own. Wish I would have know before I bought from him. If I fix cheap and dump early what is the best buy now?
Thanks,
Jeff
I would recommend a 2013 and up Cummins 6.7L. 2013 was the first year of the addition of DEF which drastically reduced/eliminated the soot/excessive regen issue. One of the major advantages of the Cummins vs the Powerstroke and Duramax is the fact that it uses the Bosch CP3 HPFP which is much more reliable than the CP4 that the others utilize. It will also not trash the rest of the fuel system in the event that it does fail. The 2 stage exhaust brake on the Cummins is second to none as well.
I owned 3 Fords over the course of 20 years including a 7.3L and 6.0L diesel until I bought the truck in my signature early last year and I have absolutely no regrets with the decision. It pulls our new to us 16k fifth wheel better than the Ford 6.0L pulled our former 12k fifth wheel and gets better fuel mileage doing so. Mountain passes are now a pleasure with the exhaust brake.
Again, good luck with getting your truck back up and running.
