Gas engine and Diesel of same specs.Pull the same.

By my sig, i pull with a 2002 8.1.....Its specs are roughly 340HP and 455 lb ft of torque. If a guy were to opt for a 2000-2002 Cummins, approx the same specs, does a Diesel pull any easier. Just a thought.
I realize they tow at a much lower RPM.
Thanks. Just curious.

  • I had a 92 Volvo semi tractor with 300hp Cummins, lets see a 300hp pickup truck out pull that up a grade at 80k, must be all perception.

You'll use more fuel and RPM to do it,but an 8.1 will run circles around a CTD of that era.

Thats exactly right. There were numerous times I had my '07 5.9 CTD running at 2900 rpm while pulling a long steep grade.

Let me tell you, listening to a CTD at those RPM gets old in a hurry.

I would have much rather listened to my '01 8.1 liter big block spin along at 4500 pulling those same grades.
  • I have a straight 6 and it only puts out 800 lbs of torque.. It does pull very well for 6 little cylinders...:)
  • Would be interesting, but the CTD you are thinking of comparing is at about a 100 HP deficit if your 8.1 is pushing 340. The turbo will make up for some of that, especially at elevation.
  • There is no replacement for displacement is what I've seen posted here numerous times. It will be interesting to see if they'll have any comments on this.

I have had both....I don't if the word "easier" is the right word. I think the right word would be "different".....Humping up a grade at 60 or so, 5000 rpm in a gasser with a screaming v8 versus 1800-2000 rpm in a Cummins, with a loafing six cylinder, it is definitely and different sound and feel. That screaming v8 sound always wore me out while the Cummins just rumbles along.....Plus, the mileage difference is verrrrry nice!

  • People will tell you that they pull different. The main reason is because the diesel makes its power at a percievable lower RPM. Even though the operating RPM of the diesel may be similar in proportion to the operating range of the gas motor. People just think that a diesel working hard at 2500 rpm's is ok and that 4500 in a gasser is NOT ok.

    Perception is everything..

Plus they paid 8k more for their trucks.. so it HAS to pull better. :D
  • I would think the torque would make up for any disadvantages that diesel engine would have over an equivalent gas engine. but if all things equal I don't see why it wouldn't be about the same, the gas having slight advantage because of the turbo spool. I don't know, if I had a choice, diesel every time. and im sure the fuel mileage will not be the same.
