Gen-Y torsion Receiver Hitch...

Hi Team,

To improve ride in the TV over our busted up interstates, I have been toying with the idea of purchasing an airsafe hitch. However, the cost $1K+ has been an issue.

So last night I was searching around the web and found Gen-Y has a new torsion receiver hitch. Here is a link to a Mr. Truck review:

Mr. Truck Review of Gen-Y Hitch

Looks promising...what do you all think?

Lots less expensive than the airsafe at about $500...
  • It looks long and heavy and it is going to put your pivot point even further back.

Have you checked into shocks in your TT ? They may help with you tow vehicle ride problem. Maybe even new and different shocks on your tow vehicle.

I'm no expert on this just throwing out different ideas for you to think about.
  • thanks...yes I have replaced the shocks with bilstiens and have air bags on the back of the truck.
  • Downgrading hitch bad idea.

Torsion axles with disc brakes on trailer far better. Or, trailer air ride.

Ordinary air bags on truck not at all a good idea with a WDH. And partly source of problem as to ride. Get the TV front axle to carry more TW, as well as shifting more back to TT. Do this will scale derived numbers.
  • not sure where the "Downgrading hitch bad idea" is coming from...

As stated earlier, with normal loading my TW exceeds the 1400 pound limit of the hensley. We go thru all kinds of moving stuff around to get within spec of the henslwy. This is the reason for the change. Need a hitch that will handle 1700 pounds of TW.

Now as long as I am changing (due to TW issues), I want to make decisions that give the best ride in the TV. Despite lots of effort and many conversations with Hensley, I was never happy with the (at times severe) ride we were getting.

What problems would be caused by adding air bags?

None. It is one of those old 'internet myths' that refuse to die. May have been true at one time for certain vehicles. Thousands of people have both. Most claim it tows better. I haven't heard of any handling problems.

Check owners manual, check an owners forum for your make/model of vehicle, call the service dept of the vehicle dealer (they probably will not know and should call the factory engineers).
  • The springs of the hitch and of the TV work well together. Adding air bags to lift rear of TV is wrong direction. No different than using air shocks forty years ago on a car. Bad idea.
