Generator mount?

I keep my 3000is in the bed of my truck. I have a camper cap on my truck. I have the generator chained to bed tie down with security chain and lock, cable locked to the 2x12 running across the back of the truck and again cable locked to another aftermarket lock tie down bolted to the side of my bed. When not using I cover the interior of the bed deck with a black sheet so at first glace through the tinted windows the back of the truck looks empty. When running I open both side windows and rear glass and direct the exhaust out the rear window and keep the tail gate locked. The generator never leaves the back of my truck.

I installed a selector switch and a front power input plug to allow the use of a shot cord between the truck and trailer. I could easily run going down the road if wanted but have not had the need.

I will say that I have left the generator running in the back of the truck unattended when we put the dogs in the camper and run the AC when we stop for shopping and site seeing while traveling from point to point.

At this point I think it would be easier for someone to take the truck than the generator.

I think I've decided that the truck is the best place for it. It's my first TT so still learning. We've had a class "C" and have a class "A" out front now but even though similar I'm learning there are differences.We'll probably be fixing up the class "A" and selling it and keeping the TT. We're both retired now and do mostly boondocking so think it will fit our needs better.

I wouldn't know the frequency of generator theft but I do know that a stout chain or cable and a padlock are good deterrents. Having sets of eyes around are a good anti-theft precaution, too. I hate to say it but a determined, drug addled thief with a big bolt cutter can get through just about any padlock or chain. The out-of-sight, out-of-mind regimen is probably the best against theft.

our gen set sits in the back of the truck with a 1/2" cable locking it down and a 1/2" master keyed master lock....the lock itself weighs almost a pound...cutters aren't getting through very easy. I have a 30' cord attached to the trailer and I carry another 45' #8 wire extension cord with me.

I have also noticed that when we camp in a national park...the people around us get to know us...I go over and talk to them, ask them different questions and such... have never had a problem. When we leave we walk over and as if they are going to be here and if they are watch our site if they could.....made lots of friends and had some over that night for drinks and such....cuts down on the looky loos and you make friends at the same time...cause isn't that the reason we do what we do??? I mean, we all have something in common....

Yah, I had a popup until this fall when I got my TT. But I used to leave tons of gear (Coleman propane stove, propane grill, radio, silverware, plates, etc) all out on the picnic table when we left. I would even leave the camper unlocked. We would be gone for 4-5 hours at a time some times...never any problems. In hind site, I was probably tempting fate quite a bit even with a relatively low crime rate in rural midwest. But then you likely have a lot of people from outside the area at these campgrounds too.
I will take this as a good reminder next year with the TT and geny and other equipment. Our campsite will probably look a little bit more inviting now than it used to.

No theft problems around here but, if I were traveling I would not leave alone when I left the campsite. RoyB's plan looks like a good one.

You know, I hadn't really thought about the theft part of it. Guess I just tend to be a little to trusting. But I had thought about doing a "semi" hard mount in the bed of the truck and that's sounding like a even better idea now. Been thinking about a shell or cover so that would make a secure concealed mount.

Our Honda comes out ONLY when in use and someone is present, when not being used it is secured in the vehicle out of site.

Ours is in a cargo tray at the rear of our TT. Unfortunately we are unable to put it in the bed of our truck as we have a cap on it and that is where we my son sleeps. Not good to sleep in Carbon Monoxide atmosphere. Have never had ours stolen but that may be because where we camp so few people dare to follow.
