GM HD News, 6.6L gasser!

I wonder what is holding them back on the gasser? Maybe the transmission? I'm a chevy guy but a 6.6 this day and age should be way above 401/ 464 in my opinion. Maybe they can put up some great MPG's or something??

8.1 we had was 340 ho and 450 ft lbs. different time of course.

Common GM...... a simple cam swap will yield those power numbers in a 6.0... so this new engine should pull more then that. Since Ford just dropped out the 7.3 on intro, I’m thinking their power numbers will be better... regardless I still have my 09 6.0 and plan keeping it till it doesn’t have life left.. well that would be a while since i only have 93k on the clock......

I more disappointed with the 6 speed still being used for the gas engine. Dodge went to the 8 speed, and Ford will be running a 10 speed. We know GM has access to a 10 speed, but they make you jump through hoops to get it in anything for some reason.

401/464 is +40hp/+80ftlbs over the current 6.0's rating, so not too bad. Better than the Hemi 6.4, although probably less than the new Ford 7.3 and at a higher rpm.

As stated, it probably has a super mild cam and lots of potential if you are in to that sort of thing, just like the rest of the LS engines.

I'm not familiar with the new 10 speed. My initial impression is that it sounds really complicated and expensive. I really feel like 6 gears are plenty. Does the 10 speed have grade braking like the 6L90? Does it grade brake to hold the cruise control speed like the 6L90? Those are 2 reasons that I went for an '09 when I bought my 2500 Sub. I wanted the transmission to downshift automatically.

GM will now use a 3.42 axle behind the Duramax and 10 speed auto trans, and no torque management! All 910 lb-ft available in 1st gear.
Also has an "after-run" feature...basically a turbo timer. The truck will not shut off if it is too hot. You turn it off, it will shut down once it cools.

It may be different in the HD trucks and with a larger engine but 6 gears in our 2014 5.3L Yukon XL is miserably short most of the times. The top 3 gears are just for cruising and there are still huge gaps between 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Even when used to haul just people, I would love a 1.5 and 2.5 gear. A lower rear axle ratio would help but then you lose the empty mileage advantage.

Simply put, gas engines need many gear choices to satisfy higher RPM, lower road speed demands of towing without giving up the lower RPM cruising choices when running empty.

Trans must have VERY LOW reverse and forward starting gears if using 3.42.
