You may be right so after cleaning and testing the heater I put the brick back where it was. Heater appears to be working normally now, but don't think I will ever sleep with it on.

Went ahead and bought a small electric heater so when on shore power it will do, otherwise I'll just use another blanket.

Heater appeared to be installed as it should have been, it was screwed to the opening. The brick was beside the heater which I "assumed" was a heat barrier as it offered no support to the heater.

The cases of the furnace are "0" clearance and so should have no reason for brick.

They may have put it in there as a heat sink.

Unless someone added a brick to capture the heat and radiate it more slowly??? But on the inside of a cabinet?
