Honda 2000 mod to run in it's storage compartment?

I just bought a Northern Lite 811 with a storage compartment for a honda 2000 genset. I see there is a vent on the bottom of the compartment. I am sure that it's not designed for the generator to be operated while in the compartment, but I am wondering if anybody has modified the compartments on their camper so that you can run it? For example a large vent in the the compartment door and or exhaust rerouting? Please post pics if you've got something like this....It would be great to be able to run the genes when at a place where it's likely to get stolen like a wall mart parking lot for example;)

  • I don't believe that any of the Northern Lite campers are design to support a roll out tray nor is the compartment large enough to house a roller tray and the EU2000i. Like I said in an earlier reply there is only about one inch clearance on all four sides when the gen set is in the compartment. The bottom of the compartment has about a two inch inside radius on the two sides and the back and a one inch lip on the front edge. The roller tray would have to accommodate that somehow without interfering with the top opening.

The N-L has a well designed compartment for manually lifting the gen set in and out. How is the rear exhaust of the gen set going to be accommodated without extending its overall length? I believe that there are too many space and design issues to overcome. Good luck on finding a solution.

I did buy but never used a six foot plastic coated bicycle cable to go thru the handle of the gen set and around the camper tie down to lock it in place. Also, while I was in Fairbanks at a city campground, a man there was telling me that a pickup truck with two people in the back pulled up along side of him, got out their bolt cutter, cut his cable, and made off with his Honda while it was still running in less than five seconds.

  • Here is a Northstar generator tray on the 12' STC. Solid and heavy duty. Door is louvered about 2/5 width.
We removed the tray to save weight since we don't use a genny and built something to carry our Rnager II stove, etc. in that compartment.

Quite a few examples out there...

I'm looking to keep the genset in the camper compartment, not build another box for it. Watching this video makes me think he has mostly just redirected the sound.... I'm mean he did a nice job on it, but what really does it make it quieter? not sure,

When at Truckcamperwarehouse last month, Bill was showing me that Northstar actually makes a cabinet you can run the Honda 2000 in. it was on the DS rear of the camper, with a door on the back and the side. you had to replace the side door with one that had a vent and it allowed you to operate the generator inside the cabinet.

I would like to see that, sounds like it might not be too hard to put a vent in the outside door. I have seen pics of a mod where the generator was mounted on a slide out tray, which I really like, would be great if you could slide it out start it and then slide her back in and close the door if it was vented. Maybe line the inside of the compartment with sound down material or something.

I'll see if I can find the pic

  • The Honda 2000 fits in my compartment with about an inch clearance on all four sides. I just take it out, use it, and put it back in.

  • There is an outfit out there that builds aluminum boxes to do just that, yes you are require to extend the exhaust and supply fresh air to the in take I believe some of these have a small fan installed for that purpose.
Do you have room to line the storage compartment with aluminum or heat shield of some sort?
I'll look for the link if someone else doesn't post it first:)
  • What does the owner's manual say about operating the Honda inside an enclosure?
  • I have the same TC and have thought the same thing. One problem would be the lack of a fire barrier since the interior is heave plastic or the like. I,d be interested to know if anyone has done this as well.
