How many of you tow with a Toyota Tundra?

Hello--

Considering a Tundra and was.....

Just curious how many out there tow with a Toyota Tundra. Please state your year, model, engine, bed length, cab size.

Also, please state what TT you tow (make, model, length, weights, etc) and if any mods have been made to truck (shocks, air bags, etc.)

Thanks!
  • Our 2007 Tundra (5.7) with extended cab, 6' bed tows our 6,500 lbs. or so fully loaded 2014 Minnie 2201DS (26'9") trailer without a problem. We've been out west and in the mountains, in higher winds, etc. I did tow our 29' Sunline trailer a few times that weighed in around 8k. The Tundra pulled it fine, but the higher weight of the Sunline could definitely be felt and I don't think I would want to have done long term towing with that combination.

But, how towing performance is perceived is very personal. Many folks don't mind towing a maximum capacity and limited vehicle performance. Others prefer to be conservative with towing weight and would rather have a little more power in reserve.
  • 2015 4WD 4d short bed pulling a 2016 RV Cruiser Signature 30' TT. Pulls great, handels the wind leaving the Desert very well. Pulled over the grape vine at 45 to 50 mph. As others have stated, average about 9-10 mpg while towing but to be expected.
These are great trucks with a great track record!
  • I have a 2011 5.7 liter 6-speed long bed (8ft) full size cab (not the "max", but not the suicide doors) and pull a 6000 27ft travel trailer. No problems. Gas mileage is crappy compared to the 2001 4.7 liter I had previously, but it definitely tows nicer. It's quieter and more comfortable on the road than my wife's car.
  • Towed with an '07 Tundra crewmax limited for several years. First a 26' bunkhouse at 5500lbs and then my current trailer at 7600lbs. Pulled both with ease (and better than my current Ram 2500 does) but the bigger tt did put us a few hundred pounds over payload. My Tundra had a 3-1 lift, 33" AT tires and airbags ( for comfort, not necessity).

It's a great truck, just a little low on payload in crewmax form. It'll do well with any tt under 7500lbs loaded if you don't need to fill the bed too. Very reliable, overbuilt but under rated and great resale value down the road.
  • 2013 four door 5.7 auto short bed. Strong off the line with towing package. Hard on gas. Towed at 60mph a 23 foot Airstream. Nice truck no mods. Not any better or worse than the big three.
  • If I wanted immediate answers I would search this Forum for Toyota Tundra and read the responses already posted which should number far more than responses to this post.
  • I hope this doesn't go into a "which is best".
    I pull a 28 foot Komfort TT weights about 6,000 lb. +.
It is a 2014 Tundra Platinum. four door short box with cap and couldn't be happier. I go over the Cascade Mountains all the time and keep up with the traffic. My traveling partner which has a 31 foot TT and diesel Ram and lags behind on long grades.
My mechanic guy told me that he see very few Tundra in his shop compared to other brands. It is a stout rig. I thought the tire life of 38,000 was a little short. See what the new replacements tires get. So fare at 45,000 miles zero repairs and no factory defects or recalls except a new canvas bag for my jack (it had a new label, must be some dumb fed regulation).
The only down side I guess is the gas mileage and small gas tank (guess the new ones have a larger tank now). I get just under 10 MPG pulling and 16-17 MPG on the highway not pulling.
We are going into our fourth year and are very happy. I have not done anything special to our rig beside the standard WD hitch, electric brake hook up etc.
