Plus, advice can vary from state to state, so how a trailer is insured in Texas may not be wise in Iowa. - boosTTExplorerYour auto policy will not cover the trailer if its stolen or damaged. My trailer's policy is around $175 a year. I think it's worth it.

- CavemanCharlieExplorer IIIIn MN when you are towing it your tow vehicle coverage covers it for liability. I'm not sure about repair or replacement. I a separate policy for that but, I've considered dropping it because my TT is so old and the insurance company won't tell me what they would give me for it if it gets damaged. They might say here's 100 bucks be happy. So, you have to decide if your TT is worth the cost of a policy. Talk to your agent he should have the information you seek.
- wmosesExplorerMy trailer is fully covered and that includes when it is in storage in a lot that is 5 miles away. In other words, insurance coverage must be adequate for your needs and based on the risk one is prepared to take (as many have already said). For us that also includes theft and damage when not in my property (which is all the time) and over which I have no control. This means that my yearly annuity for the RV in my sig is $900 for full coverage. Another reason I need to move out of a subdivision with HOA restrictions.
- rgoldingExplorerThe fact of the trailer being covered when being towed has a whole lot to do with liability insurance. Repair or replacement of our trailer is something I want to make sure is covered, so an accident doesn't end our value in our investment of our trailer. You need to ask specific questions with examples that fit your scenario. "Is my trailer covered while sitting in a storage lot." "If a tree falls on my trailer in a federal campground, who pays for the repair or replacement?" I would imagine that tree falling in a storm would be an "act of God".
- dadmomhExplorerIn TN, the trailer is covered by your auto policy when it is being towed. If it's financed, that is not sufficient for your lender....you need a policy to cover the trailer itself in the event of theft, etc. Our homeowner policy covers the contents of the trailer such as TV, personal items, etc. Our particular policy with Farm Bureau also covers additional living expenses while on the road for a given number of days if a repair is needed. The additional amount added to our auto policy which specifies the trailer and the lender requirements is $78 per 6 months.
Even if there is no lender on your trailer, strongly suggest for such a low amount that you carry it in case of theft, damage caused by whatever. - fla-gypsyExplorerIn Florida it is covered by auto insurance when connected but needs its own coverage when not. I chose to use the same carrier to avoid any conflicts. It is cheap and worth every penny IMO.
- MitchF150Explorer IIINo idea for PA, but in WA your truck coverage will cover the trailer's liability as long as it's hitched to the truck.. If it becomes UNHITCHED, it's on it's own and anything it damages is on you... At least that's how our agent explained it..
It only costs me about $200 year for FULL coverage and if it becomes unhitched and rams something else, it's covered all around...

I'm in Pa and had to get coverage when I financed my trailer. It was fairly cheap for the year. As far as I know, you are covered automatically by your existing policy for liability when towing, the same as if you hooked up a u-haul moving trailer whether or not that trailer is on your policy. That being said, any damage to the trailer incurred in an accident would only be covered if you had the trailer covered by its own policy from your insurance Co., or from the other party involved.
I would call your Insurance Co. for an estimate and professional answers to your questions.
