Is it safe to use normal garden hose for water??

being that im new to this. I have purchased a 25 foot white water hose, but the outside water at my house is around 100 feet away. I have a brand new "normal" 100 foot garden hose that I paid around $20.00 for. is this ok to use at my house to sanitize my water system? or should I try to hunt down and find a 100 foot rv water hose? being new to this I don't know if that is just a marketing ploy or if they really are required? the longest rv hose I can find at store is around 35 foot....thanks

  • Short term....probably not a problem but might want to ask yourself just how much lead you want to ingest :) I'm betting ALL o0f us have taken an occasional drink from a garden hose as children (and look how well society has turned out) :)
  • We drank hundreds of gallons of water from the garden hose growing up in Phoenix and my DW and I are still here today. That being said, we have a couple of white RV freshwater hoses that we use when camping. I have in the past used our garden hose to fill our freshwater tank if I didn't want to lug out our RV water hose but we have a dual canister filter system under our galley sink that effectively removes any hose aftertaste.
  • Most garden hose are not safe for use in drinking water, I have one green and white hose that when I got it was labeled safe for drinking water. That's why the safe hoses are white so you know what is ok to use.
  • Normal garden hoses are not food rated. I just don't like the rubbery taste. Although, who as a kid hasn't drank from the garden hose.

I use Amazon, also. In fact, I have a 50 foot Teknor Apex Neverkink on my wish list for a future purchase. It is a great hose, heavy duty, made in the USA.
  • I would feel safer using a food grade hose (white). When I smell the first water coming out the garden hose, it reminds me of the industrial chemical smell that floats in urban India. The synthetic material carried by the water might be ok or it might be toxic.

The only way that would be acceptable would consist in letting water run for a long time, and even then, who knows if toxic compounds don't seep out on a continuous basis?
  • I have not purchased the hoses for mine yet. I just paid the taxes. UGH.

However, amazon has 50' RV hoses for $20 each. Two of them and you good to go.

Amazon is a lot cheaper on anything I have looked at so far.
