it was one of those oh crud moments (Tire recall see p.5)

fast lane passing on I5 , my truck yanked left, loud bang lots of noises, fighting the swerves to hold my line. brought it to a safe stop after a half mile. total damage, lost bofh lines to the air bags, inner and outhe fender area of the bed torn up, one shredded tire. finished the last 150 miles on a spare tire and my leaft springs. TC was undamaged

  • WOW, scary story Buzz! I'm glad to hear that you're ok!
Sounds like you weren't towing at the time… good thing!

A blow out like that is #1 on my oh-crud-list. I often think about how I would handle the situation, especially while towing or driving on twisty mountain roads we have here in NoCal. I'm fortunate (knock on wood) to never have had the experience, but the knowledge that it can occur keeps me extra vigilant about truck maintenance, and tire pressure in particular.

Would you care to share some more details about your experience, the conditions, and what happened? Were the tires at 80psi? How fast were you going? How many miles were on those tires? How much weight was on the rear axle? Were there any symptoms before the tire came apart (e.g. low pressure, wandering, noise)? Do you think you may have hit something on the road… or??

    Happy Holidays,
    -Mark
  • Wow! Glad you're OK. Nasty looking blowout. Hope you get your rig back in
    "Bristol Fashion" ASAP.
  • Buzz curious how fast were you going when it blew out? Wondering also if you using any tire monitoring system. Just curious, I don't have any on my pickup, I am wondering if that's something a guy should invest in. Glad to see you kept it on the road safe and sound!
  • Glad to hear you made it safe and sound. 2 years ago, Christmas day, my daughter-in-law was driving up to see us for Christmas morning with our then 2 year old grand daughter. Some idiot in front of her spun out and caused her car to roll. My son was following in his car as he was going to have to leave early to go to work. He saw it go down and thought; my family is going to die right in front of my eyes. They all not only survived but nothing worse than a stiff neck for DIL. This will be one of those things you'll add to the prayer when you sit down for Christmas feast from now on.
  • Had the same thing happen on the way to Miller Motor Sports in Utah this last summer. I thought we were going to die..

Took out the tail pipe and truck bed. Spare was only a load range E tire (under rated for the camper, particularly with a 22 foot car hauler behind it).

Limped it into the next town, found a 24 hour gas station with a 24 hour tire store, and 19.5" load range G tires in stock (..wow).

Glad you walked away from it OK. I know that terror.. (and i wasn't even driving at the time)
  • I have never seen a tire that is shreaded worse than that one.... I'm glad that you and your wife are OK.

The airbag tubing is nothing in comparison.

I know that you checked the air pressure in your tires before you left home... and you maintain your equipment...

So it must have been a road hazard... did you ever see it... It's a good thing that it didn't get one of the front tires.

I hope that you got to your Dads for Xmas... you can start the recovery tomorrow.

How is your wifes foot... hope it didn't get hurt worse.

I sure hope you have a fantastic New Year to make up for this mess.

    Chet
  • Ouch. I am glad that you are okay except for frazzled nerves like your tire. Scary. Merry Christmas!
