250/2500 and 350/3500 are not truck classes, they are just model numbers and their capabilities can mean anything the manufacturer want them to.
I also think many put too much weight on this J2807 thing. It is just a standard set of tests to come up with a tow rating. It does not mean that a J2807 truck will outperform a non J2807 truck with the same load. It also does not mean that a higher J2807 truck can outperform another truck with a lower J2807 rating. For example, look at the 2.7 Ecoboost and 3.0 Ecodiesel. The 3.0 Ecodiesel is J2807 rated per Ram to tow more than the J2807 rated 2.7 Ecoboost yet the 2.7 Ecoboost has been shown numerous times that it will out perform the 3.0 Ecodiesel loaded or unloaded by a considerable margin.
It also doesn't mean that any manufacturer is fluffing their non J2807 numbers either. For example, a 2011-2014 F150 Crew Cab 3.5L Ecoboost 3.55 was only rated to tow 9,800 lbs before J2807. Now the same truck is J2807 rated to tow 11,900 lbs in 2015. So how is the non-J2807 rating fluff when it is 2,100 lbs less than the J2807 rating? - BenKExplorerForgotten, or most likely don't understand the contract those brochures,
web sites, etc represent to you, the public/buyer, by the OEM
It is called 'fine print' and is either at the bottom of those charts/listings/etc
or has a * or some such symbol that then is referenced somewhere else in their documentation
That 'fine print' modifies or established the 'context' of that RATING
AKA...weasel words by lawyers... - GrooverExplorer III just wish that they would tell you what the limiting factors are. If it is just horsepower and I am not as fast going up a hill as some people think it should go I don't care. If it is brakes and I have good trailer brakes I am not sure that that matters. If the transmission is going to melt down or the frame break without warning then I am very concerned.
- spud1957ExplorerWho really cares. All marketing. Whether you use J2807 or not. Most are not achievable without exceeding payload.
For example, Ram 1500 ED, Std cab 8" box, payload 1290, SAE rating 9030. Pretty hard to hook a 9K trailer or 5th wheel with 1290 payload. But most RVers have 250/2500 or 350/3500 class trucks - gotta love those ford ads about having best in class towing/payload. wrote:
Have you actually seen ads for the super duty saying best in class towing? I don't recall any.
They do for the F150, GVWR under 8500lbs. - FlashmanExplorer II

So someone asks who uses J2807.
Of course this thread has to turn into a Ford bashing thread. As APT stated, J2807 does not take into consideration available payload when it puts tow ratings on a particular vehicle.
Ford has used them on the F150/F450 since 2015 MY.

And they remove unessential stuff like center consoles and bumpers, just like most owners do in the real world.
That is the 'curb'...AKA stripper model, that are used to derive
their ratings
Along with one 150lb driver, some fluids (some full up) and for towing
the only option: "tow option"
Why folks get hosed when they use the ratings out of context. Both the
TV's "curb" and trailers "dry"
Uncle Bill taught me that when was a teen...he only bought 3/4 ton
base models (curb, stripper) that most OEMs no longer offer for sale
but use them for ratings testing
Press board door panels. Hand crank windows. Bare/painted sheetmetal
floor with a rubber mat. Perforated, press board ceiling liner.
No AC. No Automatic. No radio. Stock bench seats that were a pain,
along with the suffering delivering to S San Jose in the summer heat...
He did change and ordered the fleet side with wood flooring when he
figured he could get more into that bed.
Taught me that it had the highest payload and he regularly over loaded
it with SS Kitchen stuff for restaurants. His business was custom SS
Commercial Kitchens.
Only a couple on this portal have admitted that they owned one of
those 'curb' pickups. Our admin, Marty, is one of them... :B - IdaDExplorer

GM has been there "unofficially" on their HDs for a few years. GM and Ford had agreed that they would both do it one year. (IIRC, 2012 or 2013) GM released their figures which were actually a little higher than what they had been advertising for most of the HDs, but lower for the 1/2 tons.
I think so on half tons, but Ram is still the only one who uses it on their heavy duty models.
Ford reneged, and GM quickly withdrew the figures.
It was posted on this forum for a short time back then. GM did not want to take a sales hit on the 1/2 tons, goiung up against Fords fake numbers.
So they used their own fake numbers.
Isn't marketing great?:B
So Ford has been getting away with fake towing and payload numbers all along?
Now I understand the term Ford Fairy Dust - they sprinkle it on their trucks when they need a better rating.

Keep in mind that even the J2807 spec does not really help RVers. It is primarily performance/acceleration/braking metrics and does not take into account TV payload with respect to the TV loaded up with family and bed/cargo areas full of camping gear.
