Jayco Jay Flight 28BHS High Tongue Weight?

First, thanks to all who have helped in this trailer-purchasing process. The WDH article by Ron Gratz is excellent.

We are interested in a Jayco Jay Flight 28BHS. 5,305 UVW and about 6,500 camping weight is fine with 8,900 Expedition max tow weight.

The 4,128 TV rear axle weight is also fine. The CAT scale shows about 3,100 camping weight on that axle. (Two and four year-old do not weigh much.)

But ---- the dry tongue weight is 780 and the fresh water is just over the front axle. So -- with kitchen dishes and food, water, a second battery and propane, I wonder if the tongue weight will be 1,000 to 1,050, with an Expedition max of 895?

Is there a way to reduce this? Does anyone have this RV with an actual camping tongue weight?

That's not how it is rated. 895 using a WDH is the Expy rating. The net of %80 of TW will go onto TV axles against payload, but the full TW is "seen" by the receiver.

As mentioned, confirm whether your TV's 895lb. tongue weight maximum is based on the Weight Carrying or Weight Distribution (w/WDH) mode. This can be confirmed by your owners manual or it may be stamped on the TV's OEM receiver (owners manual trumps receiver)

A 2013 Jay Flight 28BHS has a GVWR of 7,500 lbs. Based on your targeted loaded camping weight of 6,500lbs, an ideal loaded tongue weight would be 845lbs to 975lbs (13% to 15%). At the GVWR of 7,500lbs...., then 975lbs to 1,125lbs.

Depending on your TV loading habits, you may want to check the available (remaining) Payload Capacity of your TV, the loaded tongue weight is subtracted from the TV's Payload Capacity. Your TV CAT scale weight (loaded) subtracted from TV's GVWR will be the available payload capacity.

  • Your Expedition says 895# but thats static weight on the ball before you crank up the wd bars. You should be fine , and if you toss in a few bikes off the back end ,that will lessen the tongue weight.

And to BUFFALODAN , I just sold my 2005 2505 Frontier last year ...miss the bunks.kept the kids mess up front.
  • See if your local dealer will throw a scale under one with the propane tanks full and battery in place.
  • Travel without fresh water. A lot of people ( myself included ) travel with a bare minimum of fresh water. Just enough to keep the pump primed for me, which is just below the last light on the readout. I would expect your TT tongue weight to come in between 1000 and 1100 lb by the time you add battery 60lb LPG an WD hitch plus whatever else you poke in the front area of the trailer.
