Keystone Passport - wired for solar

I asked the salesman but he didn't know. I checked their brochure and website - no information. My question is what does "wired for solar" mean? I saw a solar power connection above the front storage, but no name plate.

A standard 60 cell solar panel output voltage is 30+ volts. A good solar charger can handle ~200v input. Anybody know what the specs are for Keystone's prewired solar?
  • Typically, it is a two conductor wire exiting the roof or lodged next to a vent opening and unterminated in a cabinet or storage bay. It is installed to help facilitate a solar installation.

    So there is no
Solar powered battery charger? Its just some cable?
  • That solar power connection above your front storage is it. It's meant to work with a suitcase solar setup with an integral charge controller. If you want real solar power, you will have to wire it in yourself.

OK, so it isn't a REAL solar power connection then - it's just a connection to the battery.

Since I posted this question, I spent a bit of time getting educated on solar battery charger solutions for RVs. Manny RVs come with a 200+V input, 55amp max output 12/24/48v battery charger wired in - the user just needs to provide the panels.

I've contacted Keystone and 3 days later they got around to responding with a request for a VIN (They didn't understand my request asking about a trailer sitting on a dealers lot). Anyways, I'm sure they'll get back to me eventually. I'll post what I hear from them.

BTW, panel technology is really interesting nowadays.
  • I just did a back and forth with the summer-hire at Keystone. She didn't have a clue and didn't know enough to ask somebody who did. Sort of sad since that reflects poorly on Keystone.

I'm giving up on the subject. I am sure that bigrigfixer is correct - simply a plugin connection to the batteries for a solar trickle charger.
  • Reports from owners of "prewired" solar options on this Forum point toward what you have (connection to battery and a jack of some sort?) or just the module wiring installed towards the roof. Unless the purchaser chooses a "solar system" from the dealer, you just get wire.

I've had a single 235W module installed on my trailer roof for almost three years. I run a fridge, the lights inside, the pump, fans, my 120V entertainment devices, etc. all off that module charging my batteries and using an inverter. Solar does a better job of charging my batteries than I can with multiple 120V chargers I have.
If you need more info about the specific pieces of a solar system, post a thread in the "Tech Issues" section of the Forum. That is where many solar users hang out.
