Lance Cab Over Strut Bracket Location

When we purchased our 2013 Lance 1172 (NEW double slide) in 2013 the dealer mounted the cab over strut brackets at the edge of the front over hang where they normally are placed. The problem is we have shorter cab over struts from our 2003 Lance 1121, which are too short. In stead of purchasing new struts...I want to MOVE THE BRACKETS back about 6". Dealer said that was not recommended...but new brackets are over 600.00 and ours are fine just short. CAN THE BRACKETS COME BACK 6"...4 SCREWS MOUNT THEM INTO FRAME?

If anyone knows the answer...pls let me know.

ANYONE HAVE WORKING LONG STRUTS WHO WANT TO TRADE FOR SHORT ONES WE CAN CONSIDER.

Steve
  • Hi, I don't have them , have researched them and want them , if we get a Lance someday. Make your struts longer; I would machine a stainless steel coupling , cut the strut midway and install the coupling made to lengthen the strut to the correct length, have it tig welded together . You could get fancy and incorporate some LED running lights built into the coupling piece somehow :)

I will have to disagree on this part of your post. I have the struts and I am sure other Lance owners here have them too.
Mine work great, on our concrete freeways it takes a lot of back and forth motion out (proposing).
There are 3 lengths made for the different cabs made. Measure eye to eye in the collapsed position and post it. I have a spare set that are made for a crewcab and are to long for my setup.
If you choose to move the mounts, the advice given on moving the mounts is sound, I would email lance.
  • I don't know why Lance is the only one
with these But I have try with & without
and they work better with Buy the right
ones and sell the others and be done with it :)
  • Adding more mud to the water, can Lance owners tell me why Lance is the only camper that requires or uses struts?
  • I apologize for responding without knowing the exact answer to your exact question, but perhaps I can make some recommendations to help you find your answer.

Second, you are not going to find anyone in this forum who would be familiar enough with the structure of your camper at an engineering level to give you a educated answer.

Your first level of expertise would be the camper dealer. After that, you need to contact Lance directly for the answer. I suspect that they will give you the same answer as the dealer did: Not recommended. They will probably not expand on that answer or give a specific reason why.

Ultimately, nobody is really going to *KNOW* the answer to your question, not even the engineers who designed your camper. They designed the camper to handle the struts where the brackets are currently mounted. They did not perform any analysis on having the struts mounted anywhere else on the camper because they did not think anyone would want to mount them in a different location, so it was not worth the expense to perform the analysis.

    You're basically on your own.

IMHO, is it really worth saving $600 to risk damaging a $40,000+ camper?
