Leveling and chocks, what do you carry?

One of the last items I need are chocks and leveling. I was thinking of 2 pair of chocks, a pair of X-chocks and a 6' 1x6 and 2x6 PT lumber. Is there something that can replace the lumber that is lighter in weight? I see there is a bag of pads, 10 in the bag, anyone use these and how many do you use? My trailer is a 28' Coleman 274BH with twin axles. I have leveling pads for the four corners, along with a pad for the tongue jack already. Looking for ideas to take up less space and weight.

  • Wood blocks to go up and a shovel to go down. For the blocks I just cut up a bunch of 2x6 scrap wood I had laying around the place on my table saw. I also carry a couple of 16" concrete blocks that I tip up on-end for the rear stabilizer jacks. I'm sure there are lighter solutions but the blocks work.
  • I broke enough Lynx Levelers in my early days that it caused me to come up with a better version - my Wood / Lynx Leveling System (10 pics) ... protects the Lynx from ever cracking, prevents the first layer from shifting apart when pulling the trailer up on them, folds in half for easy storage.

I'd never rely on X-Chocks alone for securing the trailer - for that you want some sort of ground level chock. With sufficient space between adjacent tires nothing beats adjustable BAL Standard Tire Chocks but since our current trailer has especially close set axles I instead use rubber chocks for this purpose.

Get a set or two of these....Lynx Levelers....light weight, versatile, easy to store, clean.
    Available everywhere...dealer, Amazon, Walmart..etc.

I carry 2 sets of these. Compact and lightweight. The yellow ones broke easily.
  • 6x6 for under the tongue if I don't need to lower the front to get level (the lower the jack--the less wiggle). Andersen under the wheel if I need 1-3", switch to plastic blocks if I need higher because I don't like being on the very high-side of the Andersen.

I also carry the plastic blocks for under the stabilizers. My theory is that the less the jack & stabilizers are extended, the less wiggle I get.

  • It depends a lot on your RV. TT, or 5ver, plastic blocks probably OK. MH not so much. The plastic blocks shatter with heavy weights.
  • I carry (10)2X4 and (4) 2X8 pieces about 18 inches long. These allow me to stack in whatever configuration I need.
  • I have a few pieces of 2x12 about 15" long each. I keep thinking about the plastic set but just never got around to buying one.
  • Plastic leveling blocks. Usually use two. Used to use Andersen leveler but I broke too many of them.
