lithium grease

I have the dexter ez lube bearings, Friend of mine packed the bearings in the early spring of 2012 with a blue lithium grease, he doesn't have the grease in a tube just a can, I was just gonna grease them for this season with a grease gun and all I have is a grease that says High Temp multipurpose grease in a tube it doesn't say lithium grease at all on the tube. my question is I am gonna probably have him repack the bearings in the fall of 2013 because we may take a trip to florida with it this winter so should I just not grease at all this summer and wait till fall, that way I won't have to worry about mixing the grease or is it okay to mix the grease. Is all High Temp red Grease lithium grease it does kind of have a taffy consistensy.

Thanks

Brian
  • So you have had trouble, and in 9 years I have not, my sons have not and almost everyone I know that have them have not and my dealers service center sees very few in for that repair…
The facts are the manufactures are using more and more of them at a higher unit cost, and we all know how bottom line conscious this industry is…

If the claim were true it would be a major safety issue and deserving of a recall… but there are no recalls and no complaints to the NHTSA about this being a problem after all these years…

Almost all of the post I have read are from people that prefer to hand grease them and always have because they pull the drum to inspect the brakes anyway as they should, not because they had failures…

The only way for the grease to get to the brake area is if the seal is defective or the grease was applied with to much pressure, unlike the Bearing Buddy the Easy Lube axle isn’t pressurized

I've also had grease break down badly after I mixed brands.

you can maybe say the use of EZ lube axle and variations of it are becoming notoriously famous with most mfg. and are widely being used on new trailers.…

you can give an opinion about your dislikes for them and reasons for those dislikes…

but I doubt can you make a statement of fact being backed up that properly used, Easy Lube axles are notoriously known to fail and get grease on the brakes, and if you can back it up, please do, I would love to read the details… it would certainly be a cause for a recall…
bad seals have leaked grease on the brakes for years, even before the Advent of the easy lube axle...
the original Bearing Buddies and to a lesser degree the later Bearing Buddies when improperly used did have a notoriety of blowing grease past the seals and ruining the seal and brakes…

I can (and do) make the statement because I and others I know "properly used" them and had a 75% failure rate. And in my own case it was with a new trailer and correct seals. The fact is they just don't work the way they should and while you may not believe they have such a high failure rate and that any such failures are caused by unwitting owners, the truth comes in the experience. I for one know exactly how to use them.
If EZ lubes are used you either have leakage you've found or you think you did it correctly and just don't know they've failed.
There have been many discussions here on this forum about this and it always ends up that the more experienced users are aware of the issues and no longer trust them.
Now as to proving this to you? Well "you" can do a search and find hours of reading. I don't personally care if you believe it so I'm not going to invest the time searching for such threads for you.

  • If grease is leaking into brakes either it was over greased or seal is bad
  • All of the modern axles require a Lithium Complex grease rated to the NLGI-no. 2 consistency
  • I would let it go. The EZ lube is notorious for leaking onto the brake lining.
