They can't handle more then mid size car torque. - gboppExplorerI thought by now the CVT would be perfected, obviously not.
It seems like a good idea. - wcjeepExplorerI've driven a few cars with CVT. Each one has been a horrible experience. Highly recommend avoiding them until the bugs are worked out. They do add mpg. Every one I've driven has the engine set to race when pushing gently on the gas pedal. The engine is constantly cycling. If you live in Kansas it might be ok. Any place with hills or mountains will be unbearable.
- BedlamModeratorCVT = Continually Variable Transmission
The ratios in the transmission continually change based on RPM and Torque usually through the use of split pulleys on the drive and driven shafts. This has long been used in mopeds and scooters but continues to scale up to heavier applications. - hone_eagleExplorerFord casting plants in cooperation with Nemack have been casting engine blocks for GM for over 10 years.
The iron foundry did work for all for the competitors including american motors.
If the rabid fanboys only knew eh?
Even the Aluninum F150 was seen at the warren tech centre a couple of years ago ,they were stamped out in the current (2012) body panels.
Apparently as soon as it was too late for them to get a rival ready ,Ford gave them a few ,they all do it. - hone_eagleExplorerCVT
constant velocity trasmission I think - ramyankeeExplorerI actually did make it through the article. Didn't understand much but very interesting. Sort of gives insight as to adding speeds to the newer tranny's. I was wondering why 8 speeds were in passenger cars.
One question, what is CVT? - LessmoreExplorer IIInteresting article. I have previously read about the joint GM/Ford venture into 10 speed transmissions for RWD and 9 speed transmissions for FWD vehicles.
But, until your link (thank you) I haven't seen anything lately.
Good to see that the Big Two are working together on these expensive projects.
We do have a global economy and joint company involvement of research, design and scale of production with different products, does help with the eventual consumer price. Think there will be more of this in the future....maybe other parts of the power train such as engines and components parts like turbos, etc.
It has been done before. The world engine...the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder designed and used by Hyundai/Kia, Mitsubishi and Chrysler/Jeep seems to have been a success.
