They are designed for Global travel...not everywhere is as safe as the USA
You are right, a lot of places are much safer:)
I read a ride report from an Indian guy that rode from Chicago to Alaska, then to the tip of south America, then through Africa on his way to India. While in Africa he traveled with a small group for a bit, him on his Suzuki DR 650, 2 of those huge and expensive euro monsters, and 1 couple in a VW syncro 4x4 van. He said for 4 wheels the van was the way to go attracted a lot less attention. If you are interested it is Jammin through the global south by Jammin Jay on ADVrider website in the ride reports section, watch out you will get addicted - 805greggExplorerThe little windows look like the owner are a little paranoid, more like a jail cell

Tony, do you have a picture of the coffin bus? If not I'll get Pat to email you one. Do you use photobucket for posting pictures?
No I just use pictures that are posted on my Picasa albums. Similar thing to photobucket
There was also a topic here recently on an easy way to post photos using http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/201045551/Forums/PhotoUpload/RV.NET-Photo-Upload.html - RobertRyanExplorer

South America you can easily get to 16,500 feet without going off-road, or even off-highway and there have been reports of people having some very expensive problems with Euro 6 engines.
Late model US Pickup Diesels HAVE a lot of problems in this regard. A Very well known Australian Adventurer who I have since spoken too was not very impressed with all the troubles he had with Pickup base of his Expedition Motorhome. He also was not impressed with the durability and build quality of the Motorhome itself. Not a happy camper at all.Tony Lee wrote:
Why would you want one of those fancy expedition vehicles costing half a million dollars when you have the perfect platform right here in the USA. Cheap, plentiful, and all it takes is a bit of flair and you can end up with a truly unique vehicle. Seen in Moab.
That would be a nightmare on the narrow mountain roads in South America and elsewhere. Narrow track and not so bulky.Tony Lee wrote:

The Moons did that with their Old Nissan Patrol. They had a great time. - AKsilvereagleExplorer IIOn my last trip-vacation-travel in September 2013 (which seems like an eternity already) I stopped at the Grande Prairie Walmart in Alberta and seen this nice one as it was certainly worth a snapshot to me...

See these vehicles all over the world and they are by far the most impractical vehicles you could invent. Apart from the major deserts and of course any Walmart parking lot.....
First one I ever seen in a Walmart parking lot, but you hit that post to a tee LOL.Posted By: Sluggo54 on 06/03/14 08:37pm
Back in 2006 there was one of these in Yellowstone, with French occupants. They were all over my case because I didn't shut off my Duramax while setting up my fifth wheel, thus I was wasting the earth's resources. Had I not idled the truck while getting off the hitch and leveling, I would have been short battery power in that no hook-up, no gennie world.
Finally had to get rude to get them to go away.
If they spoke French to you, they would be on your case twice as long versus telling the exact same thing in English using half as many words. - GeoRVExplorerI saw the same Man in Bullhead City AZ in late April camping on the Colorado River. I had to pull over and strike up a conversation with the owner and take some pictures. It draws a lot of attention, there were 3-4 people that stopped and took pictures while we talked. He's 1.5 years into a N. Amer. tour and retired from Man. They had just come down from Alaska and drove it across Canada. They were caught in several snow storms with 2 ft.drifts and were the only vehicle traveling on the roads. Way too large for anything I'd use it for, but what a cool looking rig.

I just saw a MAN expedition vehicle similar to the OP headed east bound Hwy 58 in California this morning just below Tehachapi. Think they are meeting up in Moab? Funny, had never seen one, read this thread yeaterday, and saw one today. Who'd a thunk it.......;)

Don't s******.(What the!!! "s******" ??????? Censorship gone mad!! The word is s-n-i-g-g-e-r - a real word, not a bit racist) This one has been all over Mexico and Central America running on used cooking oil. - tony_leeExplorer

Tony Lee have you photos of your IVECO Daily 4x 4? They are using these a lot for newish Expedition vehicles in Australia
Highest point you can drive in Australia is about 7000 feet - so there isn't going to be any problems with clogged particulate filters and engine shutdowns.
South America you can easily get to 16,500 feet without going off-road, or even off-highway and there have been reports of people having some very expensive problems with Euro 6 engines.
My Iveco was 1994 model so no electronics and no auto-shutdown stuff - just gradual reduction in power and gradual increase in smoke out the exhaust.
Photo?
Guess this one, taken by the previous owner in Mongolia, tells it all
After that, it finished the trip to Korea and then across to California and down to the bottom and all around for four (?) years more. Doubt whether the new Ivecos would fare so well. - RobertRyanExplorer

Fuel consumption 8 gallons/mile.
Strangely economical for what they are, but not for the average camper. SLR Motorhomes and Bus 4x4 Australia are working on 6 x 6 versions. Based on a MAN Truck.
