Major Repairs

All,

Reading in different posts about these fuel system/fuel pump repairs and such huge repairs with diesels, is that the same for all (Big 3) or mainly Fords? An $8000 repair sounds crazy?

Thanks
  • Any newer diesel with emissions is going to cost you money when parts break. It's more complicated and requires specialty tools and knowledge that only a few have. Fuel issues can occur with any new diesel regardless of manufacturers. It's always a gamble, research online and filter through the fake stuff or cheesy complaints that you may see. A lot of times it's the owners neglect or overabuse of the engine that leads to its downfall. On the other side, if you treat your new truck well, watch where you get diesel fuel from, and service the filters more frequently then you should have better luck then some. With a gas job, a lot less worry so hence I have one. Good luck on your search, let us know what truck your really interested in or have bought.
  • Diesels have very expensive parts and cost big bucks to repair. The reliability of all are probably pretty good. But it doesn't matter who's is better then who's (and the claims are dubious at best), if your one of the unlucky ones that has a problem, you're in for a big spanking.
  • Any response is going to get bashed. All I can suggest to you is to do just a little research and see what information YOU find. From my research, only 2 manufacturers used the fuel pump that had a much higher rate of failure. From those 2 manufacturers that used that point, one manufacturer accepted responsibility and fixed under warranty, while the other blamed poor quality fuel and shifted responsibility to the user.

For what its worth, I haven't heard of any issues with the most recent changes to the fuel pump.
