Ordered 5 MAXXIS tires for my TT from Discount Tire to be installed next week. Of course they wanted to sell me a protection policy for $15.85 a tire. Covers everything including blowouts for the "life of the tire"I asked what they considered to be the life of an ST tire, and he didn't have a good answer - just told me they were great tires and that they sell a lot of them.I don't usually buy warranties for anything, but having had a blowout, was considering it. These tires run $165 each. Have only given a down payment as the tires are on order, so I can still decline.What is your opinion on this? Worth it?Please don't turn this into an LT vs. ST tire thread - have done my research and am getting the tires I want. Thanks.

Good question. Maxxiss are the only ST tire I will use but they are not perfect (of course).I've had two of them suffer a tread separation but they both could have been my own fault. One had hit a large curb hidden behind a bush and then the tire shop noticed a tiny tread separation a couple of years later.The other one had gotten a nail in it and the tread separation happened several years later exactly where the repair was. Neither tire suffered a catastrophic failure.The first tire was covered under the Maxxis 5 year warranty (it was 2 weeks short of the 5 years) and they paid 90% of the new tire cost. The one with the nail was on me.So assuming the extra warranty would have covered the second tire, I would have just broken even buying the warranty.I'm thinking it's not worth it myself.

That may actually be a good deal depending on what they consider the life of the tire although I have had great success with the brand. Maxxis warrants their tires for 5 years (unlike many other ST tire makers who quit at 3 years)but not against road hazards.

If you're paying $165.00 a tire, get the insurance. I only paid $100.00 per tire for mine, installed with steel stems.

I used to sell car/truck tires years ago and at the time under 3/32" of tread was considered "worn out" meaning the life of the tire was over. I think the tire protection from Discount Tire/Americas Tire is worth it if you travel a lot. There's usually one of those stores in every major town and I've had a few tires replaced for free.

Just a thought...

but wear bars are pretty much meaningless on ST tires.
Normally you will never see them in the 7+- year useable life of ST tires unless you really tow A LOT or if you have severe axle alignment issues.

Over the last 7 years, Discount Tire has replaced 3 tires on 2 of our vehicles under the lifetime warranty. All caused by nails in the side walls. Not sure what I paid for the certificates but, purchasing 3 truck tires would have been a lot more.

Wear bars are at 2/32 inch tread depth.
And not just passenger car tires... trailer tires and truck tires have them too

Easy choice for me. I'm in the risk management business. If the life of the tire is 5 years, you are paying .10% of your purchase price for the warrantee. I'll spend way more buying firewood for my campfires over the same 5 year span. Given the choice, I'm buying it and not thinking twice.

When I changed up from load range C ( 50 psi ) to load range D ( 65 psi ) tires, I went with the brass "Tubeless snap-in valves for high-pressure" in this article.

Steel stems may or may not fit. If you have aluminum rims I doubt they will fit.

Car tires have the wear strip that tells you when you are down to 1/32 of an inch of tread left. This is considered the useful life of an evenly worn tire.

Useful life is not judged by miles but by tread depth. I suspect it is similar for TT tires. I buy the insurance because they often include free puncture repair. I have used this several times. However, I have never has a tire replaced with any significant tread life warrant left.

Tire size is 205 / 75 R15. Load range is D - 65 psi. The total cost for 5 tires - I'm buying a new spare as well. is $79.85.
