modified Sine Wave inverter question

plan and simple, what has been your experience.

with my degree in electronics, yes I understand the difference between a true sine wave and a modified sine wave.

I have been running my 211K dish receiver and my little LCD TV's off of a 350w/700 peak (cheep store bought) MSW converter for some years now.
I have even ran/charged laptops off it in my truck as I drive down the road

I need to buy a new one.
have i just been lucky with my 15 year old MSW converter?

I can buy 2000w modified for the price of 400w pure sine wave. And I am leaning towards the larger one.

(ps, nothing wrong with the old 350/700, but it needs to go back into truck and I need a dedicated one for my Arctic Fox.)
  • I have had the same experience you had with our whole house MSW inverter, only thing that really indicated an issue with the power supplied was our microwave. Not a big deal at the time since I use our onboard genny to run high amperage items anyway.

I decided to go with a dedicated inverter for our entertainment center since those were the items most often powered via inverter. Went with a 300 watt Samlex PSW inverter and it works great powering our HDTV, HD satellite, Xbox, Bose, and charging various portable electronics.
  • Anything with magnetics in it can have some trouble with MSW inverters, and most electronic equipment these days have switching power supplies with components sensitive to the high frequency spectrum of MSW. They will run very noticeably hotter on an MSW inverter than a SW inverter. Hotter = shorter life. Against this is the lower cost and higher efficiency of the MSW inverter. Not a clear winner, that's why there are so many of both!
  • My experience with them has been that microwave ovens aren't nearly as happy on MSW, nor are LED lights (although in a camper your lights are probably all 12V).
Power tools seem happier on pure sine wave too.
After several square and modified sine wave units, I got a pure sine wave Xantrex and can't see going back.
