Moving up from F 150 to F 350 6.7 diesel

Congrats on the new truck! You are now one of those who REALLY understand what all of us F350, 3500 diesel owners have been saying all this time! Now you can share too, and just shake your head wondering why they don't wake up when they say, "Do I have enough truck....?"

Yup, nothing wrong with more and stronger horses to pull the load.

Especially if you can afford to feed them.

I certainly hope the new truck tows a 6500lb camper easy. Now put 12k lbs behind it and let us know how it does. diesels are great for the power, but for 6500lbs isn't necessary. combine that with the issues some new diesels have and the extra $$$ for the diesel along with a small fuel tank (yes there are options, but are $2k and up) and they are off the table for me and many others.

My previous truck was an F350 short bed with the ridiculous fuel tank size. I bought it new and before I drove it from the dealers lot I had them replace the OEM tank with a Titan 50 gal replacement tank. A computer adjustment had the gauge functioning properly. Sure was nice to have the better distance between fuel stops.

Our current truck has a 38 gal tank which is okay but doesn't give us the same distance between stations.

I am much closer to my limits, but have a completely comfortable experience. In other words, a proper, modern half ton is all that is needed for 6500 pounds. Sure, more is better, but not necessary.

You'll get used to the small tank. I like it as it gives another opportunity for DW to get out and stretch her legs. 300 miles or so is a long time to sit.

My duly diesel 3500 has a 37 gallon fuel tank. This is my 3rd 3500. First was gas, second two were diesel. With both diesels, I always fuel up at half-full. Only rarely have I passed the half-full line before filling up. That means I'm running about 18-19 gallon of fuel before filling up.

At home and as a daily driver, I'm getting 15 mpg. Towing, depending on road and weather conditions, I'm getting about 10. Usually it's 11.2 towing. Taking 10 mph @ 15 gallons, that 150 miles. When actually towing, on longer trips, we stop almost every hour to hour and 1/2 all the time. That's approximately every 100 miles. We've never found this to be a disadvantage.

You will adjust to fuel consumption and driving distance between fuel stops. If you know you are driving long distances between fuel stations, like some of the Western United States has in some of those deserted roads that run a hundred miles between anything, you'll do fine. And if you do drive one of those 100 mile isolated lonely roads out West, you can always bring along extra fuel cans.

You're from Indiana. You'll not have any problems anywhere East of the Mississippi River finding a diesel fuel station, anywhere, definitely within your fuel tank range.

And oh! ... one more comment ... as someone mentioned above ... yes! Those 350 and 3500 really SHINE ... REALLY SHINE ... when the trailer reaches 10,000 pounds and up!

Nice thing about the 3500 and 350, you can tow almost anything! 5er, TT, untily trailer, car carrier trailer, horse trailer, farm machinery, or even a very, very large boat! You never know what you may end up using your truck for!

Ain't it great driving effortlessly? Now complete the setup with that 50 gallon replacement Titan tank. An in-bed tank will become a pain.
