Just talked to a dealer from the frozen north today about the Ram eco diesel and he says they are selling every one they get in, the day it arrives. Also said they have used their own to haul autos on a car hauler to other states and it does an awesome job of towing. Guess it is more than a grocery getter if properly equipped.
This is the exact reason why I will never buy one of these Eco diesel trucks used... idiots misusing a little 3.0 diesel motor to be a car hauler. Motor and drive train will be junk, with that small a displacement engine, trans and rear diff, in short order.
That is sending a boy out to do a man's job. Fail. I would never use an ecodiesel to pull a heavy toy hauler trailer either.
Maybe car dealers and salesmen in TX really are that dumb? - The_TexanExplorer

Finally, a person with a little common sense. What a person does with his or her truck, regardless of the size, is that persons business, no one else's.AH64ID wrote:

Good point, some do use them for towing, but maybe just not the majority.
This is the "tow vehicle" section! That seems to be forgotten by many of the folks posting in these "mileage is all that a truck is about" threads.
Fact - Most people on this particular forum tow, and most have a life outside of RV'ing, so they want one size fits all for their lifestyle.
Correct... but you're forgetting that the people in this forum with 1/2 tons that tow are a very small percentage of 1/2 ton owners.
It's the 95% rule... and generally you don't want to be operating in the 5%, and 1/2 ton owners that load up to max GAWR, GVWR, GCWR are in that 5%, even on flat ground.
How do you reach this assumption?
You can say the same thing about 3/4 ton and 1 ton truck also... most of them are used for fleet or work trucks to job sites, not towing TT's or 5th wheels. - NinerBikesExplorer

I think you guys are off the mark.
Most 1500 series trucks are not used for heavy hauling or towing. Most of them are used to haul people and the odd thing in the bed. Research says only 5% of them ever go off road.
Remember, this is an RV forum, and most of you think of things from this perspective, but most people do not buy a 1500 series truck for towing or hauling.
That's what 2500 and 3500 series trucks are for.
I respectfully disagree... there's a whole section on Travel Trailers, and this Eco diesel probably fits the bill for most any TT up to about 5000 pounds or 26 ot 27 feet long.
How do I know? Because I bought a 240 HP 3.0 L 406 lb ft TDI diesel VW Touareg SUV to tow my 21 foot 4000 lb Travel Trailer.
5th wheel capable, the Eco diesel, no, but this is RV net /Woodalls, and they do have a section for TT's and Tent campers too, which will fit nicely behind the Eco diesel.
There are many ways to skin a cat, it just depends how big or small a cat you have to determine the size of the tool to do the job.
Granted, the Eco Diesel is a niche market truck, but the niche needs filling.

I am just stopping by the TOWING forum, which has become WEENIE truck land. Where on the TOWING forum, we advocate for the slowest truck with the least power, and have determined that in spite of industry data to prove otherwise, most folks use their trucks exclusively to pick up groceries. Cue the twilight zone soundtrack.
Or the reality, that many half tons do split duty, part time empty, part time overloaded. And much of the time not being driven gently or slowly. Making underpowered trucks that require a $200 service, and fuel that costs 50% the dumbest possible option I can think of.
North Dakota Fuel Price.
Gasoline $1.99
Diesel $2.95
Even if you only want a grocery getter, you don't need a 6000# one that burns fuel that is 50% more.
Depends where you live and drive...
Los Angeles Diesel
RUG
About the same price for diesel as Premium.
