I think you guys are off the mark.
Most 1500 series trucks are not used for heavy hauling or towing. Most of them are used to haul people and the odd thing in the bed. Research says only 5% of them ever go off road.
Remember, this is an RV forum, and most of you think of things from this perspective, but most people do not buy a 1500 series truck for towing or hauling.
That's what 2500 and 3500 series trucks are for.
The only people I know that don't use their 1500/150 trucks for hauling and towing is "kids". Then all they want is the roar of a V8 equipped with big dual pipes - Fords and Rams around here.
Grrrrr. Those d@mn kids makin racket in their loud trucks! - transamz9Explorer

I am just stopping by the TOWING forum, which has become WEENIE truck land. Where on the TOWING forum, we advocate for the slowest truck with the least power, and have determined that in spite of industry data to prove otherwise, most folks use their trucks exclusively to pick up groceries. Cue the twilight zone soundtrack.
Or the reality, that many half tons do split duty, part time empty, part time overloaded. And much of the time not being driven gently or slowly. Making underpowered trucks that require a $200 service, and fuel that costs 50% the dumbest possible option I can think of.
North Dakota Fuel Price.
Gasoline $1.99
Diesel $2.95
Even if you only want a grocery getter, you don't need a 6000# one that burns fuel that is 50% more.
Do we really need power windows, leather, sun roof, aluminum wheels, carpet on the floors, heated and a/c seats.........
Why did you have to quote that Troll? But now that you did, WTF are you talking about $200 service? If you are one of the uninformed haters that feels they need to spread lies please start your own thread to do it.
FYI you can buy an 8 oil service package from Mopar that gets the cost down to $46.88 (do the math Troll Boy) per oil change, that beats the Ecoboosts oil change! Full Euro 100% synthetic oil (Pennzoil), filter, lube, tire rotation and top off all fluids. A far cry from $200.

Sorry.....:S - AH64IDExplorerIt's a shame GM doesn't have a HD burb with a 7K rear axle, 6K front axle, and a 12K GVWR with a 22-23K GCWR and a diesel. Place the rear axle a little further aft than it historically was and it could load up a family of 5-8 and tow anything with a tongue.
- BenKExplorerAll of my vehicles have been or are TV's except for the sedans
Even my 2,400 lb 2 seater. Ditto my current 2000 Mini Van. Both have towed
stuff from the local rental (concrete mixer, lawn spiker, lawn thinner, stump
grinder...that was tough with the mini van...etc) because just didn't want to
take the Silverado C10 or Suburban
The mini van has towed a PUP that is around 3.5K lbs and wont' do
that again.
My point in that...is that they generally do NOT need a pickup, but since it is
a LAGS (latest and greatest syndrome) fashion statement to own a pickup truck
or SUV with 20's and all of the other bells and whistles
Bottom line: The OEMs make the most money on 'half ton' pickups & SUV's, so that
is where they direct their engineering departments to design to
Why GM killed the +8K GVWR Suburban...their marketing surveys says
the VAST MAJORITY vof buyers only want half tons...that MPG is at the
top or top 3 of their 'have to have' lists...as is 'car' attributes...which
is bleeding over into the +8K GVWR stuff - The_TexanExplorer

SO, what you are saying is because my truck is rated at 2000# payload, and a tow rating of 11,700# that I should NEVER believe the manufacturer rating of ½T and I NEED to scrap it and buy a ¾T to tow the 10,000# trailer I tow? Sorry Charlie, but I believe what the engineers and manufacturer put in writing, not some armchair wannabe that has NO idea what a properly equipped ½T can safely AND legally do.
I am of the belief that 1/2 tons are light duty pickups, for light duty use. Small towing, light loads, etc.. If you want a pickup to do any decent towing and hauling get a 3/4 ton or bigger, simple as that.
Many, many, many people overload their 1/2 tons and it's downright scary what some people do with them (not that HD pickup owners don't, I just see more overloaded 1/2 tons around here). So part of my stance is based on what I see on the road, get a HD pickup to do HD pickup jobs.
It's just my opinion on 1/2 tons, it doesn't mean people don't have a need for them it just means I think too many people try to make 3/4 tons out of them.
So yes, if your primary questions when shopping for a pickup are about towing and payload then I think you should start at a 3/4 ton. - AH64IDExplorerI am of the belief that 1/2 tons are light duty pickups, for light duty use. Love the quote from the CEO... "fuel economy is the number 1 customer need in a 1500 truck."
Pretty interesting statement IMHO.
I would say he is a bit out of touch with reality.. :S.
Obviously fuel economy is important on any vehicle, but its sure not the number "one" customer need when they buy a new truck.
Probably about 4th behind--
1--How much can it tow
2--How much can it carry
3--Can it beat a (fill in your own choice here):W
If those are your top questions you shouldn't be looking at a 1/2 ton, get a HD truck for that.
I applaud Ram for not chasing after the "my 1/2 ton is bigger" title. It's a friggin 1/2 ton! Use it like one or buy a 3/4+ truck.
IMHO Ford has gone too far with their 1/2 ton. The few folks I know personally that have the newer Fords and loaded them to capacity have found the OEM tires inadequate, so they put LRE's on them... At that point they have all said they should have bought a 3/4 ton. The ones that have towed heavy, even the ecoboost, say the should have gone 3/4 diesel...
The ecoboost is a good motor, but it should be more concerned about mileage wars than towing wars.
This is a pickup. Why do you feel these are invalid questions? So you are one that believes the primary use for the Ram Eco is how many soccer balls can it carry? Just because that is Ram's marketing position does not mean every person that purchases a half ton is a soccer dad. - boocoodinkydowExplorer

Yes.
.......and up North the diesel is usually less expensive than gas-o-line and a lot of us do our own service so $200 is way off the mark, our interval is longer as well.
...........thought choice was good?
