New Forest River ROCKWOOD HIGH WALL HW296G

Has anybody bought a Highwall 296G recently? If so, what did you pay and where did you get it? BestRV in Turlock is showing $17995 and not wanting to move off that price. RVDirect shows $14,888.00 with a $895 charge to Orlando. I am figuring $1500?? delivered to California?? That would put a reasonable price around $15,500??

Any tips on how to get them to budge?? I tried talking turkey to the sales guy. He would not budge so I asked for a quote online. The e-mail quote I got was like it was full of B.S. like
• Free Walk Throw - ???
• Free One Deep Cycle Battery
• Free Full Propane Tanks

and

We discounted than the Web Price. Please make sure take advantage of the unit my Boss gave you the deal.

The price they quoted was the same as on the internet.

We really like this trailer, but they are the only dealer near us that carries it.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • If you were looking at a small pop up that could be pulled with a compact vehicle, I could see wanting to pay a lot even if the amenities are few. However you are buying a big pop up that will need at least a midsize truck/SUV with a hitch receiver rated to at least 600 lbs. It's also big so it's not going to be garaged to easy. Why pay that type of money for a pop up when you could get a travel trailer or a hybrid travel trailer that would take the same storage and tow vehicle.

While my trailer is significantly bigger and heavier, it's loaded and very luxury next to that Forest River Pop Up. My camper wasn't even $15,000.

For that type of money, you could find a nice Hybrid camper with a minimum 16' box with queen bunkends.

You could get a Jay Feather X17A or X17Z for less than my trailer optioned nicely or a X19H for the same price as my trailer, under $15,000. My MSRP was $20,106 and I got it for $14,300 + Sales Tax, nothing else.

With a pop up that big, you can get the same size Hybrid, even lighter, that has a lot more features and is less work.

If you thought of all this already, no big deal, good luck on the hunt for your pop up.
  • Did you end up getting one? I want something similar and saw the one in Turlock also. The main thing is that I want a hardwall toilet/shower instead of the shower curtain kind. The high walls seem to be the only ones that have that. I'd be curious as to what you ended up with out the door :)

  • That's the same problem. If I wanted a small pop up, they are a dime a dozen, but the nice big ones are really hard to find. If you do buy that far from home, make 100% ABSOLUTE sure that everything is working as it should because you don't want to have to drag it back for any service work.

When we took delivery, we did our demo walk in their service bay where it was shaded. When we got home, we noticed that the canvas over the dinette had a spot where light was shining thru. It was right on the seam where it was hidden by the support pole. Basically the exterior vinyl that was applied to the outside of the canvas was messed up in this area. It's not a hole or a tear, just a spot where the vinyl wasn't applied evenly.

They are getting me a new canvas ordered under warranty. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING works properly before you leave.

M sister finally saw ours last night and she said it looks like a pop up on steroids. As much as she dogs me about being a tight ass with my money, she said it is nicer than their hybrid.
  • Patperry,
Thank you for the feedback....We are now looking at the Flagstaff 29SC from CW which is almost 2 hours away.....they are offering $16925 + tax etc. I am not sure it that includes a battery and a full tank of propane. Plus the F150 gets 17mpg for a 200 mile round trip. It is going to cost me almost $100 + 4 plus hours to drive there, get the trailer and drive home.

The questions I am now ciphering is how much the elite membership is worth, how much more CW will come down on the price and what other extras can I get them to throw in?

The unfortunate thing is that there are really only two dealers with-in a 100 miles that have the big popups that are self contained.
  • I just got a Flagstaff high wall 27KS. Though mine is 2' shorter, the best I could do on the price was $15,160 and at that price she was willing to let a sale walk. My price ended up being about 23% off MSRP.

The problem I encountered was that there's just not alot of high wall campers available, especially in Dallas/Ft Worth Texas area. The dealership where I bought mine had 2 on the ground...and that was it for a 100 mile radius to my house. Another dealer had some coming in, but wouldn't touch that price.

    14,888 RV direct price
    +895 Orlando delivery
    +1500 California delivery

$17283 your price. Split the difference and offer $17500.
  • We were looking to replace our PUP. We lucked out with our first PUP. We went to a dealer, liked what we saw, had only a little drama with the price, and ended up having a good relationship with them w/r/t to repairs, etc. I later read online that it is important to get a dealer you trust, because it isnt like you will have a lot of options when you need work done, esp under waranty. Made sense, but was not in my mind when we bough that first PUP. Our 2nd PUP was used, but had been owned by the service manager of the dealership. Again a good transaction.

So, for our 3rd - the dealer stopped carrying PUPs. And, Coleman went out of business anyway. This left us back to square one. We went to several local deals. We were interested in the Somerset PUPs, but no dealer was local, and Somerset seems just a bit disorganized. We sort of liked a Jayco model, but were not wild about the dealer or the price. We checked out Starcraft (which are basically Jayco now) and *really* did not like the dealer, especially after we found out their 'best price especially for us' was higher than what they listed online, and that they had a BBB link on their page, but they were not members.
We checked out the Coachman PUP and thought it was junky. We never found a FR dealer near us.

We found that Trail Manor had a new smaller model, and went to check it out. Had a great experience with the dealer and they had an impeccable reputation. It was a bit more than we wanted to spend, but it was so perfect. They did everything right. They managed to get us our model, for an upcoming vacation, we picked it up, took it home and had a problem with the door, and they sent someone out to fix it on our driveway (45 mins, one way...)

The moral of this story is if you do not like the dealer or do not trust him, you are taking a risk buying a trailer from them. Consider walking away.
