New Guy Here Lance 820 TC

Hi Guys Been looking at a 1999 lance 820. New to truck campers myself. I usually pull a 30 ft Montana, 5th wheel double slide.Need something for short stays, Week or so with shower,2 adults & 2 mini/ fat wiener dogs I have a 2007 Dodge 3/4 ton, 6.7 diesel 4x4 shortbed 6sp auto trans.Pretty much stock, has tow package, factory jake brake. I will be towing a Rhino side x side on a 10'x 6' trailer. That's another 2000 lbs plus camper loaded, another 3500 lbs or so. Just wondering if it's doable & what susp. mods. I should do unless I get a lighter camper or a bigger truck. ! Any suggestions. Also, Thx Jerry L :@
  • I do not agree with reddog1 you will still be over the manufacture weight carrying capacity, which makes you overloaded and breaking the law if in an accident you will be held liable.
  • Welcome to the Forum.

I agree with SugarHillCTD. In my opinion, your tires will be your limiting factor. Depending on your vehicle handling preferences, you might add a greater load capacity tires, a heavy anti-sway bar, air bags (or similar), and over time heavier than stock shocks.

Other than with tires, I am not as concerned with total weight. My truck is a 1997 2WD 2500 auto trans. My total weight if 10,400 lbs. I have had it with this TC since 2004, and have well over 150,000 miles on it. With the upgrades I suggested, the only issue I have had is tires too soft, and the 19.5's took care of that.

After considering tire load capacity, I suggest running what you have and modify those things you do not like.

  • I ha d 2001 dodge diesel 4x4 I found that with a full fuel tank and myself and wife in the truck on the scale for trucks my weight was 7245 lbs. I could only put 1400 lbs. in the box any more and I was overloaded, I change trucks to a 2001 dully diesel everything good now, do the math I think you need a bigger truck.
  • Jerry,

    Welcome.

Folks here will give you their opinions about your setup and they are going to be varied.

Mine? Load the camper and find a scale.

Then look at tire capacity. That will be your rear axle weight limitation.

Then think about rear suspension add ons. Air bags, Super Springs, Timbrens and/or Torklift Stable Loads are some of the choices.

Then a rear anti-swaybar and perhaps new shocks might be needed, but see how you like how the truck/TC feels going down the road.

Best of luck with your TC!
