The high school boy in me wants to spin the tires in this truck.
Sorry but all I can think of is a stupid buddy from high school who got a MonteCarlo SS with the turbos for his birthday and burnt up a set of tires in 20 min.
With 4 tires at what $250 each (?), that's a $1000 20 min of fun. - Bionic_ManExplorerWith the CP4 “issue”, isn’t it as much about how the manufacturer (ie RAM) stands behind the warranty on the engine as to the weakness of the pump?
From what I have read, it is (or was) much more of an issue for one manufacturer than the other. - ScottGNomadRam has up graded their fuel filtering. Hopefully that will keep the CP4 happy but I will wait at least a couple of years before making any buying decision. I have learned that automakers will keep installing known bad parts or designs even in new models. One should never assume that just because it looks all new, everything will perfect.

Would you rather have an "all new CP-5" or a revised and improved CP-4? Surely Bosch has learned a thing or 2 about their pumps in the last several years. If not, I'll be the first to come here and whine that my beautiful new truck left me stranded. ;) BTW, the Ford forums are pretty quiet about failures in the last few years since the pump was changed.
One of the things about the CP4-2 is/was the fuel supplied to it. In North America the fuel does not meet the Bosch requirement. On top of that Ford did not do a good job on detecting water in the fuel. - ExxWhyExplorerWould you rather have an "all new CP-5" or a revised and improved CP-4? The one BIGGIE IMHO that sucks is the 32 gallon tank!
the first thing that comes out is the stock tank. I'll put a titan 55 gal replacement in, with 7600# of payload I think I can carry a couple extra gallons of fuel.
back to the drawing board GM
Back to the drawing board for what? I think I would wait and see what the Ram does going up Ike. If the Ram embarrasses GM and Ford, I would be inclined to agree. That has yet to happen on any run I have seen since they started the test, typically the Ram is number 2 or 3, but who knows maybe this is Ram's year. I think it will be interesting to see what the Ram fan boys say about the CP4 pump. Only Idaho has stuck to his guns. I bet there will be a rethinking about what a POS it is, now that Ram is using it.
The reality is I feel all these new trucks kind of fall under the same category as the 700+ horsepower cars. There is a relative small subset that can take full advantage of the potential. Just because you have the cash to purchase doesn't mean they have the skills and temperament to hook up to 30k lbs or run that 10 second quarter mile. Modern vehicles have surpassed the average consumers pay grade in a lot of instances.
I wouldn't disagree with that. 1000 foot pounds or 910 or even 800 gives a pickup more capability than the vast majority of owners can utilize regardless of even their skill level in pulling 30K plus. I think the OEM's do it because they can, and buyers have a never ending want for more. The same desire that gave way to Bully dog and Edge and all the others years ago when the diesels were only making 500 foot pounds.
The ZL1 1LE Camaro is one of the fastest cars in the World (something like number 16 if I remember correctly) around the "Ring" in Germany. There are very few drivers that can extract that level of performance out of the car, yet there it is a Hypercar beater for under $75K. They don't sit long on the dealers lot, most go to Cars and Coffee on Sundays when they do leave the dealers lot. One day it will end, but until then "smokem if you gottem". - spoon059Explorer II

The point I was making was many people cited the CP4 as a reason not to buy the GM or Ford depending what year was being discussed. With Ram apparently using the CP4, which someone here suggested would happen due to the CP3's inability to pump to high enough specs to gain more power, that is going to cause some guys to perhaps rethink their position on the matter.
I don't think its going to cause people to "rethink" their position, rather they aren't going to have much of a choice.
Although it seems that since the redesign the CP4.2 has been much more reliable. Hopefully that means that its turned a corner and is a better quality pump.
It will receive plenty of testing by consumers before I am next in the market to buy a truck, so we shall see what is down the road in another 7 or 8 years. - blofgrenExplorerNo CP4 pump for me; I'll be keeping my 2013 as planned!
I'm not keen on the grille, either. And the end of the manual transmission is very disappointing but not surprising. The Cummins/manual combo is fantastic. - mich800Explorer

Looks like I will be keeping this truck for a while longer. Although My BMW has a CP4, but it is different variation from what I have read.
