New to TT - sewer question or lack there of

Hi y'all - we were previous tent campers and now TT owners! HUZZAH! My question is - we are camping for 5 days at a site that only has electric and water hook ups but no sewer at our site. We have three young kids and really do rely on that "potty"!

Looking for ways we can cut down on our water in gray and black tank...maybe things I have not thought of?

Paper plates, plastic utensils (instead of washing our usual stuff)

Use the shower and bath houses at the campground when possible.

Looking for other tips and tricks from all the experts out there!

They do have a dumping station which we will use on our way out....

Anything ya got in your bag of tricks would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
  • With my hot water, I never heat it up all the way. I will cut the water heater on long enough to get the water just above my body temperature, then cut it off. That way, I just use the hot water side and don't have to worry about cooling it down with fresh water.

When we dry camp, we also capture the first water out of the shower into a small tub so we don't waste water while trying to get the right temperature. Be sure your shower shut-off is working well to avoid using too much fresh water while showering.

  • During the summer, when camped at our local state park, the lake comes in handy in lieu of a shower, the outside shower on our MH gets used to rinse the lake water off as well as a quick shampoo and wash/rinse.

Agree with the use of disposable / burnable plates, using the camp facilities during the day as mush as possible.
  • I used to used a portable tank for the grey water. They have wheels and can be towed behind the tow vehicle. Very easy to use.
  • Wash your dishes in a dishpan and then use that water to flush the toilet. An added benefit can be not having to turn on the pump (when you don't have water hook-up) during the night to flush the toilet.

As others have mentioned, the grey will likely fill first. We used to use cat litter jugs if we needed to get one or more two showers in before having to dump. They hold about 2.5 gallons and have screw on lids. We don't dry camp enough to purchase a blue boy especially since I don't know where we would store it.
  • My recent experience is that the grey tank will fill waaayy before a black tank of equal size.

With close supervision of water use we ( two adults, two kids) can get two days out of our grey before it is full (35 gallon)

One way to deal with a full grey is to dump a little at a time into a bucket and pour it in the toilet. Or some camps have a grey dump/ basin you could use.

Or you could get a tote and haul that to the dump station.

I'm sure others will have more details and ideas as well.

Your first two ideas are good ones. The black tank may not become a problem for the amount of time you are there. You might want to look into one of these.
  • Good Afternoon!
You seem to have it all covered.

Use the bathhouse for showers & daytime restroom calls.

Paper/plastic will save on the dish washing.

There are only two of us and we still use the campground facilities so we do not have to dump early.

    Happy camping, Carmen
