Newer diesel with least problems

DEF is stable 2 or 3 years at room temp. If you are worried about maximum stability you need to avoid having a full tank during summer months. A few months at high summer temperatures causes more degradation than years of typical storage.

I have not seen truck stop on West coast who would not have DEF pumps.
Trucks have fuel tanks on both sides, so the stops have 2 pumps connected to the same meter.
Meaning even if you have fuel on 1 side DEF on the other, you can still fill it at the same pad.
A bit annoying. I used truck stops for fueling my sedan (before they switched to B20), who has fueling pipe on passenger side and I have to pull the hose form driver side pump to start the meter, lay the hose on the ground and then go to passenger side hose.
What I learned in the mean time is that DEF is having limited shelf live.
My sedan has DEF tank in the trunk, design for 10,000 miles fills at oil change, so I can't fill it from the pump, but being sceptic how old is DEF sitting on store floor, I am getting a can to fill it up with DEF and truck station and then fill up my sedan at home.
Truck stops have high volume sales, so you know DEF is fresh.

I have never tried to use the truck fueling areas at truck stops. I just use the regular pumps and do not recall seeing DEF. I did try to use a truck fueling area once but found the pump would not even take a credit card. Maybe that was just that particular truck stop.

Most truck stops (Pilot, Flying-J, T/A) have DEF at the pump and they also have pumps on both sides.

I cannot recall seeing any gas stations with DEF fueling. Maybe I just did not notice since my previous Dodge Cummins did not need DEF. I understand a tank of DEF should last about 8000 miles. I plan to top off the tank before setting out on a major trip. I was even thinking of carrying a gallon or so in case I get low in the middle of nowhere.

Having owned from new a 2004, 5.9 Cummins, a 2007.5, 6.7 Cummins and now a 2016, 6.7 Cummins, so far (now at 27k mi) the latest has been impressive...However, though reliablity is improved, newer diesels still have lots of highly expensive emissions components... My latest plan is to keep the truck only until the warranty nears its end - thus the notion of the 100k mi diesel - thanks to the EPA...

3 tons, now with 73k mi to go - lol

Small sample size but so far I have 27k on my 2016 Cummins and have not had to submit any warranty claims yet, truck runs great. A friend of mine had such good luck with his 05 Duramax that he bought a new 2018 one. After 5k miles a push rod cap came loose and his truck has been at the dealer for three weeks while they have his engine apart trying to figure it out.

Best advice I have is to read the forums specific to the engines you are considering to see what the owners are saying and see if you can detect any trends. You always will have a few disgruntled owners but if you get many of them saying the same thing, pay attention...

I've only had the middle versions, but I do like my 6.4. I can't imagine a better version. Doing almost empty trailer back from Montana makes me wonder if it's like 3.73 instead of the 4.30. Thw mountains, loaded or not, don't impact the truck at all even with the TC and wife's uncle's travel trailer.

This is the first time I've opened up this particular post.... And scooter said pretty much everything i would have.

I had a '01 7.3L, went to a '15 F450. Everything he says is true. And I had done just about every bolt-on you could do to a 7.3L -- Banks turbo and intake, 4" exhaust, programmer, bigger sway bars, Rancho 9000's...etc, etc..the list is huge.
Then I got my '15 F450 -- bone stock a night and day difference. It is so amazingly quiet even pulling a pass with me loaded to almost 30k lbs, tons more power, super stable, and better mpg. And the factory Jake Brake - love it!
