Nissan Titan Gas MPG

FLT test on the 5.6 gas Titan.

To cut to the chase, it got 8.6 MPG. The truck had 2.9x gearing, so it seems like it would have been a bit better.

For comparison, the 2017 3.5 EB got 9 MPH, and the EcoDiesel got 13 on the same loop.

  • There is an article at driving.ca comparing the diesel and gas Titans including fuel economy.
  • I hope there are big discounts on that truck, at $55k it is only $7k cheaper than what I paid for mine last year!
  • The 2.9 gears were fine with a 7 speed tranny.

The reason for all the down shifts are a peaky torque curve and lack of horsepower. This engine had right at or even less than 300 horsepower where tested. That's not much, so it had to keep shifting to keep it in it's best band.

If tested around Davis dam the results would be much different because it would be right at it's full rated HP.
  • I wasn't too keen on the constant downshifts to 6k plus RPM. That has to take it's toll over time.

For the price you could get a nice 3500 SRW Ram/ Cummins and get better mileage and tow a lot more. Likely any of the big three diesels, in that price range would be nicely equipped.
If you like the truck get it with a lower gear ratio!

A comparably equipped diesel 2500 would almost certainly be $10k more.

I am not the target market for this truck, but I don't buy that the problem here is pricing. The F150 that was tested was similarly priced, wasn't it?

Final drive ratios of the F150 with 3.55s and the Nissan with 2.90s are basically the same. Ford has a taller top gear than the Nissan- (0.63 vs 0.77).

Based on the numbers I assume towing and 2.90 is really tall gearing for a gas TV.

Having watched the video it is clear that even with almost 400hp, the gearing is too tall for the seven speed trans, and 360 lb. ft. Of torque. The trans kept hunting more than the other two.
