Northern Lite 10-2000 jack bracket problem

This is a 2003 model year. I am having a problem with the front jack bracket on the drivers side. It is rusting on the part that goes under the camper. There is an electrical ground connection on the tie-down and the surrounding bracket has rust developing around the opening for the tie-down clip and also between the camper and the jack bracket. I have two photos that I cannot post because I don't have them on a public site.

I was wondering if any other Northern Lite owners have noticed a similar issue?
  • Nope, I just bought mine new last month. It doesn't look that hard to do though. Put the camper in your truck (if you set it on the ground you'll have no way of loading it in your truck in case you need to go camping before you're done fixing the bracket). Remove the jack from the bracket. Unbolt the bracket and gently work the sealant loose. Sand off all the rust and old paint. Find a shop that powder-coats. Reinstall in reverse order but leave the camper on the truck so you can go camping again. I'm not sure what sealant they use against the gel coat when you bolt it back on. Hopefully someone here does.
  • That's the right photo. My tie-down is stainless and it passes through the steel bracket just the way yours does. It's the not-stainless-steel jack bracket that is the problem. It's rusting around the hole for the tie-down and around the edges of the jack bracket.

Have you ever taken your bracket off?
  • I went and looked how mine is constructed. It appears to have a stainless steel tie-down bracket passing through a slot that is cut in the camper jack bracket. The ground wires attach to the camper tie-down bracket.

Maybe the older NL didn't use stainless steel for the tie-down and I could see where the fast-gun could quickly rub off the paint and expose the metal. My last camper was doing this and rusting on the tie-down eye area. The jack bracket appears to be powder coated but I would say that like any metal where the finish is coming off and bare metal is exposed rust would be a real possibility and not all that uncommon seeing you're in Western Oregon. If it was mine I'd remove the brackets, clean off the rust and either get them re-powder coated or at least primed and painted before it get's too bad. You'll most likely have to re-do the tie-down bracket more often if it's not stainless as the fast-guns will take off the finish pretty quickly.
