Yes, for my ST trailer tires, I will only accept tires that are less than 6 months old and has Maxxis as the name brand.

For me, if I go to buy new tires, I expect to get "new" tires as in "recently made". If I wanted 8 year old tires, I'd ask for new old stock (NOS) tires and would expect a big discount. But I wouldn't use 8 year old tires anyway...

It's pretty common knowledge that tires begin to deteriorate from the day they were made from the effects of ozone, heat and UV rays. It's not right that old tires can be sold as new IMHO. Problem is, in the absence of legislation, corporations and stores do what they want even if it is unethical or just plain wrong. The NHTSA appears to be studying the issue but has not come up with anything.

Finding good info. on tire "shelf life" is not that easy as it is often confused with "in service life" and "life span". From what I can find, US tire and auto manufacturers recommend a shelf life of 6 - 10 years. I would expect this to be from the date of manufacture. What can be confusing it seems, is if you think that your tires *might* be good for 10 years, what if they are already 8 years old when you bought them and didn't know because nobody told you? Then someone could be driving on tires going on 20 years old. The next time we are in the market for new tires, I'll sure be looking at the manufacture date.

Besides the date of manufacture question, it's bad enough that our $35,000 TT is sold to us with tires that already have over 2,000 miles on them. At least they are "recently made" as in what you would call "new"...

The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice issued June, 2001, states "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture."

The actual lifespan of the average tire is under some debate, and the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has not set a specific time frame, even after significant testing between 2003 and 2007. In the report to Congress following its testing, the NHTSA said 84 percent of tire-related insurance claims were from tires that were more than 6 years old. Despite the NHTSA dragging its feet, there are several authorities in the field that have set time frame. Ford Motor Company has set a 6-year shelf life on all of its tires, meaning that if a new tire sitting on its shelves is more than 6 years old, it disposes of them. Many other tire manufacturers have installed 10-year shelf lives for their tires, including but not limited to Bridgestone, Firestone and Michelin. Several other automobile manufacturers have set 6-year recommendations for their customers to replace tires. Given that information, while the NHTSA is still working on an answer, it is best to replace your tires every 6 to 10 years, regardless of their condition.

Fleets retread tire casings 2-4 plus times. Surely they are over 1-2 years old.

Aircraft run retreads that are Who knows how old.

I suppose I don't see the issue here. Goodness, the tires were 2 years old from manufacture.. But they stayed out of the sun, on a rack, for the whole time.

My new to me Treadwrights I am about to order for my Dually will certainly be over 2 years old and on their second life. I won't even blink about it.

I may have tried to get a discount for the NOS tires, but I would have ran them, no problem at all.

Had this happen to me,,, Bought four NEW St Maxxis tires from a local recommended shop,,, the guy rings me up I pay,, go to drive home and I see the tires are two years old,,, I go back in and the manager is acting like I am an idiot!!Tells me it makes no difference,, its the warranty not the age of the tires!!! Tell him to take them off,, I want new,, he says he will have to charge me a mount and dismount fee,,,I tell him a few things that I souldnt have!!!
Then I tell him,,, "Your right,, its the warranty,, So being I am two years into the warranty to refund me the depreciation difference" he then says I will warranty them personally, I tell him,, no I will take the depreciation difference out in a rental fee for these tires and when new ones (with in 6 months old) come in I will bring the trailer back and you can have these...
A week later new tires and I will never do business there again!!!

I always ask for, and get, tires no older than 6 months per DOT code. Is it necessary? No idea, but we've put over 200,000 miles on various non-Chinese ST tires and only issues have been a few repairable nail punctures. It seems to work for us.

Note I read the reason the DOT code is now four numbers, is some places were holding tires TEN YEARS so they could be sold as new. With the three digit code used until 2000 there was no way to tell!

Shoddy journalism.

Anything you buy today, wasn't just made yesterday...stuff sits on store shelves, or in stockrooms or distribution warehouses, sometimes for years. This is common.

It's the date of manufacture that counts when it comes to tires or other perishable items.

Tires outgas whether used or not. Google tire outgassing and read articles like this. Then decide for yourself.

FWIW, the shop that installed the new tires on my motorcycle (two cost more than four on the tt) drills 1/2" holes in any tires they have in inventory more than three years old. This shop has worked on drag and speed record bikes and knows a bit about tire safety.

What they ARE required to do is date the tires manufacture date. If it's too old for your use then don't buy it. Prices will rise based on the number of tires that must be destroyed instead of sold.
