Plastic Awning Cover

What are your views of the awning covers made of plastic that are suppose to protect you awning from sun? And maybe protect you from an unraveling awning while driving?

Saw one today that was advertised to "snap" on. $125

I was concerned that sections of plastic pipe used as a cover might slide around and snag, or blow off in gusty winds spearing a neighbor's window.
A length of canvas, as long as the awning and a foot or so wide, with a wire sewn into the upper edge hooked on one end and bungeed at the other, drapes over the rolled awning nicely.
Mine had been part of a very old jib.
If it blows off, it's just fabric.

Have yet to have ours come off. Like I said earlier I drove five miles at 55 mph and itnever came off. We used the rain gutter for ours and it is stable and has her to come off.

I made mine out of 2 pieces of plastic rain gutter from Home Depot.
I cut off part of the edge on one piece so it would slide inside the other to adjust for my length and it just slips right over the awning roller. It fits snug but a high wind has blown mine off on occasion.
I wouldnt recommend towing with it on, or I really dont see any reason to. I just put it on while parked at home. I think it cost about $12.

I did the same thing. Works great, just remember to take it off before traveling. Yes, I drove 5 miles mine on. Good cheap in investment.
  • The one that smokedummy did was a nice one and works really well.

    You can see it HERE

As for a lock that will stop your awning from unraveling while driving. This One is what you need, made in the USA and works.

Believe me I had it happened to me but never again with the Awning Lock.
  • We just replaced our 20 year old awning in September. This awning has sat rolled up 90% of the time in Southern California sun near the beach most of the time and in the desert several months every year.

It started showing signs of wear and tear about 3 years ago. The fabric was beginning to tear at each end near the channel on the side of the RV. But it lived through some pretty good storms and winds while deployed over the last 3 years. Finally this year in a wind storm it gave up.

I'm guessing a $20 investment in one of these DIY awning covers may have extended the life another 20 years..... I will look in to making some sort of cover.

Thanks to all above and the ideas you've shared.

I saw a thread a couple months ago, someone made a cover out of pvc pipe. I went to the home center and found some perforated flexible drain piping. about 1 lb for 10 feet. 1/4 the price of pvc. I cut about 25% out lengthwise. It is light, snaps on and off easy, was cheap and easy to make, I have driven with it on (unintentionally) and it stayed fine. I can even pull it off without a ladder. Probably about $20 Not sure how to add pics here, but PM me if you want more info.
Sounds like a great idea to me. I love making things that are as good as you can buy for way less $$$.
