Question for you master mechanics

My son bought himself a 2005 (more or less) Ford Expedition that been sitting on blocks and I thought it was a stupid purchase but kept my mouth shut, thinking that making mistakes was the one sure way to burn a lesson into your head. He has had all sort of minor mechanical problems and has been replacing parts on it one by one.

Now it stalled in the middle of the highway and and I went and pulled him out. We left the truck in a parking lot while I drove him to school. When we came back to get it, it cranked but was loud and stalled after 500 feet or so. So we towed it home.

He then spoke to his older brother who I regard as anything but a master mechanic. Who told him sight unseen it was a thrown rod and the engine was trashed. I told son number two to get on an expedition forum and ask there. He claims no answers but I suspect no question in the first place.

Looking myself it seems as there are all sorts of things that could cause the rattling/knocking sound. So I'm putting it out to you guys. What do you suggest doing?
  • It could very well be a loose rod if it is a loud hammering sound, or as someone said could have spit a sparkplug. Have a local mechanic listen to it and they should be able to tell you. Otherwise it's just a guess.
  • Have somebody, anybody, hook an OBD II scanner to it to get an idea. He can pick up a cheap one on Amazon for less than $50 and will always have it for future use. I have a Ms 509 maxi scan and it seems to work well.
    Hey , when's his birthday?
    Good luck
  • if you can post a video or something so we can hear the sounds, there might be a snowballs chanceinhell to figure it out. Otherwise, theres No snowballs chanceinhell.

  • Very hard for any of us to diagnose from 2000 miles away. Could be a whole list of possibilities.
I guess the best advice is to take it in for a "master mechanic" to put his hands on it....and write a check..
  • Well if it really through a rod it wold do more than rattle or knock. It would run only second before it put that rod through the side of the block or the pan.
So if you dont see any parts hanging out and oil gushing onto the garage floor, it's probably something else.
More likely it spit out a spark plug, which is common for that eng. If it did, I would repair and replace all of them .
I have a friend with an idiotic brother who just keeps letting it spit out one after another and leaving him sitting all over the state.
