I think between fuel filter changes, your also suppose to drain the water separator every/every other fuel fillup. A few ounces drained into a clear container to verify clean fuel or water collected removed as basic preventative maintance as well. This is done before you get a unwanted water in fuel light indicator/message. (may not prevent catastrophic amounts of water in bad fuel though) Takes less than 5 mins. Be sure to dispose this waste fuel properly.
I had water once in my 98. The WIF light came on so I drained it and had a tiny amount of water. So the sensor worked. Before that I would drain a small about occasionally but never found a drop. So I never drain mine anymore just to look since the sensor works so well. - ib516Explorer II

Cummins says every 15,000 miles on my 2007 CTD. I think they know more than all of us on this site.

Better to follow sound direction than what some stranger does with his truck. Have you seen some of the junk people drive? - Ramp_DiggerExplorerI have a 2005 with the 5.9 book says change every 15000.After doing some research on the cummins forums I found it very common to have injector problems or failure due to dirty fuel. If I rember correctly the factory filters will remove particles down to about 4 or 5 microns. for added protection some owners have installed an aftermarket secondary fuel filter kit between the factory filter and the inj. pump, using a fleetguard filter number 5320 that will remove particles down to 2 microns greatly improving injector life. The factory filter will catch probally 99 percent of the dirt ,water and so on,allowing the secondary filter to only need changed every 50000 mi or so. When considering the cost replacing injectors or injector pumps ,regular filter changes is the cheapest insurance you can have.IMO.

- Texas_BohunkExplorerI change my filers every 15k. with my 2004 3500 cummins. Will do the same with my 2013 Ram 2500. Just received new filters from Geno's Garage.

The new diesels are too expensive to fix for due to lack of maintenance. If the fuel filter is too expensive to replace at the recommended intervals that truck may not be for you. Injectors are a costly replacement and a good fuel filter is cheap insurance. Mine gets replaced at 10k miles. When camping sometime diesel fuel comes from questionable places.

be sure to get the 4 micron NanoNet furl filter for the 10-14 MY. - brooks379ExplorerI buy a case of filters at a time and change them every 10,000 miles. Cheap insurance.... have you ever had to replace injectors ? If you ask someone that has never owned and maintained a diesel truck they all say ....fuel/gas filter ???? I've never changed it.... same with transmission fluid.....what do you mean have I ever changed it ? Do you need to change it ? One thing is for sure changing your fuel filter will never hurt your diesel motor.
