Rear end gearing should be based more on what the truck is used for. If towing 75% of the time or more then a higher ratio, but if towing is only 10% or less then the lower ratio.
At highway speed towing the rear end ratio does not make as much difference as in the past because of the 6 or greater speed transmissions.
It does not matter if you run in 6th 5th or 4th or even 3rd gear when towing. That is the purpose of a transmission.
We may even see a CVT transmission in the half ton trucks in the future. Then at highway speed towing the rear end ratio has no effect. But for best economy when not towing you would want a very low ratio.
