Maybe because no one else is doing it , and it's an innovative way to "one up" the other manufactuers..?? heck, who knows?
I don't much care for it, but can see where it could work for certain applications. I don't take my tailgate off my truck....no reason to....
Reminds me of the 'dutch doors' on the Excursion. - ib516Explorer IIThere is also mention of it being able to be remotely released and opened via the key fob.
I can tell you one of the BEST features on my 2014 RAM is the power lock on the tail gate via the key fob. One press of a button secures it. Not only to prevent theft of the tail gate itself, but also for secure weather proof storage. I have an Undercover Flex tonneau cover that is opened from underneath, and so once the tail gate is locked, the whole bed becomes secure storage. - TurnThePageExplorer

Those of us that need access to the bed while the trailer is hooked up would LOVE a design like this. Additionally, you can reach things in the bed without having to lean across the down tailgate. I can imaging lots of good reasons for this design. The main drawback would be that it couldn't be nearly as weight bearing as the standard tailgate.
Why? Tailgate needs to be either open, closed, or off the truck. I'm not seeing the virtue of this design. :h - spoon059Explorer II

Thats a selling feature? Would hate loading a quad etc on a tailgate like that...
I think most, if not all, manufacturers recommend removing the tailgate to load a quad or bike in the bed. If you had a tailgate that swung open like this, you wouldn't need to remove and store the tailgate... you could swing it open, load up and swing the tailgate doors closed. Not sure if I like it or not, but I appreciate the chance to see how a new design works.
I bet people *****ed about power steering, air conditioning, 6 cylinder engines, turbo diesels, turbo 6 cylinders, etc etc. Innovation and competition are great things. - ryanw821Explorer

So soccer moms can put groceries in the back without leaning in over the tail gate. Love the mindset where the family grocery getter needs to be a 1/2 ton pickup, Pretty sure Ram makes their bread and butter from this crowd, gotta play to them ;) - LantleyNomadNothing wrong with innovation but if it ain't broke don't fix it.
My TV doubles as my work truck. I use my tailgate everyday and have never wished it would swing open.
I'm not against it as long as it works and doesn't develop a silly alignment issue between the panels. - mtofell1ExplorerThe tailgate on my new 2500 Ram hits the tongue jack on my TT where the one from my old 2006 Dmax barely cleared. It's not a deal breaker but is certainly a PITA when I want to grab something from the bed. I can definitely see a use for the new design.

Number one reason: Because they think it will sell trucks.
What is the purpose of LED lighting in a truck bed? Same reason.
Are you for real? I'd take the light over that retarded tailgate. - Bigfoot_affairNomad IIThats a selling feature? Would hate loading a quad etc on a tailgate like that...
